This is a fantastic book to enable you to understand the principles behind the method and this, combined with the other books+watching the Dog Whisperer series, has had an amazing impact on our two Bichon Frise. I'm new to dogs and dog training: our Bichon Frise had several homes before coming to us and were hyper, unruly and destructive - a handful all round! It was obvious this came from never having rules/boundaries, and they had the typical 'dogs-treated-as-kids' syndrome (see the chapter 'How we screw up our dogs'!). Cesar's methods have worked wonders, and I have found it the gentlest of methods. If we think of discipline for children and look at options of "DON'T DO THAT!!! STOP IT NOW OR I'LL HIT YOU!" (aggressive management), "LOOK at this! I'll give you this chocolate if you stop doing that" (incentive management), "Can-we-please-sit-down-and-discuss-the-behaviour-you-have-just exhibited,-because-it-would-be-great-if-we-could-discuss-you-behaving-differently,-but-only-when-you-feel-ready" ('passive' management), or a calm "Please stop what you are doing now, because that behaviour is unacceptable" (assertive/leadership management), Cesar's training is the latter. It is calm, quiet, assertive and clear. What he means by being Pack-Leader is the equivalent of calmly saying to a child 'I'm the parent; you don't have to worry ...' with the reassurance and security that gives; it's not about enforcing an 'I'm the BOSS!!' attitude.Read more ›
I took this book on holiday, and couldn't put it down or wait to get home and put his advice into action.
Training started immediately upon collecting Ralphie from the kennels; not having eye contact and waiting until he was calm-submissive before making a fuss; we haven't looked back.
Unlike many other 'training' books, Cesar Millan explains HOW he brings dogs round, not just that he did. I particularly liked his description of his own upbringing as it helped me understand the mindset, and although I wondered at the start if he would ever get into the tips and wrinkles of leading your pack, all the information was necessary to understand fully the concept of 'dog whispering'.
Like many other reviewers, I think this book should be issued with each dog; it would certainly have saved me a few tears!
He instructs the correct way to deal with individual situations such as 'meeting a dog' and 'taking a new dog home' moving on to eliminating common problems like barking, etc.
A day to day plan is outlined, advising how to structure the dog's required routine into your life, and put his guidance into practise.
This book is a must read for dog lovers and interestingly, also useful for those who dislike or are afraid of dogs.

Interesting book. Certainly worth a read. Tends to lean towards dominating the dog in the relationship, but tips can definately be gained from reading it.Published 2 days ago by Amazon Customer
Unfortunately Cesar Milan has became a famous dog trainer regardless of his training methods being unnecessarily violent and unscientific. Read morePublished 9 days ago by Alize
