About the Author

Adrian Fortescue (1874-1923) was a Roman Catholic priest and Englishman who was an influential liturgist, artist, calligrapher, composer, polyglot, amateur photographer, Byzantine scholar, and adventurer. He has been described by Michael Davies as, 'the greatest authority on the liturgy of the Roman Rite the English speaking world has ever known'. Canon J.B.O'Connell (d. 1977). Ceremonial and rubrics were his life's work and on the death of Adrian Fortescue in 1923, he was asked to prepare the third edition of this book. Over the next forty years he prepared a further nine editions. Canon O'Connell was a secular priest of the Menevia Diocese. Dr Alcuin Reid is a former Benedictine monk. He is a leading liturgy scholar and the author of The Organic Development of the Liturgy.

For those attached to the pre-Vatican 2 liturgy (which I am, though not exculusively so - a good Mass with guitars flutes and bongoes can be equally uplifting) this is an essential reference work. The book is well known but the additional information on music, and the incorporation of Bededict XVI's observations greatly ehance this classic. It is to be commended to MCs, church musicians and students of the liturgy. Dr Reid has done a fine job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Foundation book for understanding the Tridentine Mass 16 Dec. 2012
By Maria Pringle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Fr. Fortescue goes into the required detail to allow for an understanding of the proper execution of rubrics and procedures for different Masses whether Low Mass or a Solemn Pontifical. There is also good coverage of altar requirements as well as what is needed in the sacristy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for the Extraordinary Form 16 Nov. 2014
By GaryC - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Excellent resource to any trying to understand the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Mass as well as the Divine Office, Nuptial & funeral ceremonies. As the owner & reader of older editions, this one is useful in its new section on music as well as the application of the provisions of Summorum Pontificum and determinations of Ecclesia Dei in the copious footnotes.
5.0 out of 5 stars A good reprint of a classsic 22 April 2016
By Joseph V. McCabe - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Although this is a reprint of a classic and does not strictly apply to the revised Roman Rite of the Mass, it is a useful guidelines for those responsible for planning large-scale or special liturgies and is a good companion for the more complete "Ceremonies of the Roman Rite" for bishops that is based on the revised rites.

However, in parishes or communities where the 1962 Rite of Mass is maintained, it is an excellent resource for the positioning of priest, deacon (subdeacon) and servers for the rite.
