Format: Paperback
This play catches the spirit of our times in a way that few of its contemporaries do. It does not neglect the need for suspense, tension, and driving narrative, while at the same time experimenting with form and presentation in a refreshing departure from the 'norm'. The greatness of the play, I think, rests not so much on its theme but on the absolute mastery of Neilson's dialogue. It is speech pared to the bone, cutting through the rigmaroles of pleasantries, frills and ornamentation and delivering truths with a near Greek-style clarity. The unexpected happens in almost each scene, building towards a terrific denoument with a clever twist in the narrative technique. It feels like brilliant television - one scene carrying on from where it left off two scenes earlier, and always compulsive, always engaging. Sex, shame and censorship have, to my mind, never been treated with this kind of rich compassion in so short a work.
