There is a very nice addendum with more information on the stories, and also (this is crucial) the pronunciation of words/names in the stories. Whatever you know about sounding out words, forget it when dealing with Gaelic languages (Irish, Welsh, Cornish, Manx, Breton, etc.). For example, the evil Queen Mongfind's name, in the Irish tale "The Slave Woman's Son," is pronounced "MO-vin." Spoiler alert: The King names the slave woman's son, born to him out of wedlock, as his heir, rather than any of Queen Mongfind's ("MO-vin's") good-for-little-to-nothing sons.
This is the fourth Barefoot Book we are reading and each one is better than the one before. The stories are mesmerising and the illustrations are delicious. These are the kinds of books that fill my heart with gratitude to the authors and publishers for sharing these precious gifts with the world.
