I bought this because firstly I love Brahms and secondly because I have a new found respect for Kliegel as a soloist following my purchase of Beethoven Cello Sonatas [also on Naxos and to be thoroughly recommended]. Both sonatas [op 38 and 99] are beautifully played with an excellent balance between piano and cello. I found the sound generally is what we have come to expect from Naxos - high standard at a reasonable price. As the other reviewer has commented the pieces are of the cello in reflective mood but none the worse for that. I found the transcription of the third piece, the first violin sonata, excellent and a welcome addition. Especially if bought used, this is an absolute bargain. Great listening for anytime but especially autumn or winter when the sound of the cello just somehow seems just right. Happy listening

Rather like the pianist Jeno Jando, the cellist Maria Kliegel has made several CDs for Naxos over the years, many of which are very fine. This CD is no exception, and contains both Brahms cello sonatas. The pianist here is Kristin Merscher, and the pair of German ladies seem perfectly in home in these works. The sound quality is perfectly acceptable, although not quite up to Naxos' very high standards of today (the disc was recorded in November 1992).

These lovely works are rather reflective (often described as "autumnal"), although very lyrical. I like them very much and this inexpensive CD would be an ideal way of adding them to your collection.

The other work on the CD is the cello transcription of the beautiful first violin sonata made by Paul Klengel in 1897. Personally, whilst I enjoy this performance, I think the original instrument is rather better.

The CD comes with good notes from the ubiquitous Keith Anderson. Recommended, not just for those on a budget.
