I originally bought this recording when it was first released, on cassette as I was a cautious being in those days, and I was buying it unheard, based on a lyrical review in the Guardian, who don't normally review this kind of thing, and whoever wrote the review had, literally, fallen in love with margot's voice.
Whoever they were was right, and this is CJ's best in terms of lyrics and melody, and choices of cover songs. Every time I listen to it, i stop what i am doing, especially for powderfinger. Some lyrics have become household phrases, (I kinda like these extra few feet in my bed) and i can remember what I was doing (stopped doing) the first time I listened to it.
The tape having worn out I am buying it again on CD. There's only one other recording I've done that for!

Aside with Trinity sessions I here find CJ in it,s most subued, distressingly beautiful mood. These were pathbreaking albums that redefined what "country" can be: moody, existential. Lowkey, but more consoling than depressing. I like CJ:s later albums too and have heard them on stage (in concert they are surprisingly funny and extrovert, especially Margo), but this one is what for me really IS Cowboy Junkies. A classic.

While some people may swear to the power of Barry White as an aid to courting a prospective paramour, the Cowboy Junkies produce music that haunts and seduces. Margo and her brothers have a laid-back yet precise style that defies categorisation. From Country to the Blues, the Junkies will lift your spirits, satisfy your soul and drown you in lazy, post-coital vibes. This is my favourite Cowboy Junkies CD.

I really like this album, though I've never had any inclination to buy any other Cowboy Junkie records. This one just seems like it's enough. It's really good Sunday morning music (especially if you've had a rough Saturday night...).

The music is a kind of countrified Velvet Underground and the singer has a fine melancholy voice.

The first three tracks are particularly good, the lyrics to `Cause Cheap is How I Feel' are very droll, and `Thirty Summers' sounds, to my ears at least, like a touching love song from a wife to a husband who has Alzheimers (I'm probably completely wrong).

Anyway well worth a listen.

I love this album. I had it originally on vinyl and thought it was time to update to CD. I find it relaxing and like to listen to it when i am on my own to chill out to. The songs are lovely and the singing is beautiful.

Though this album is not easily categorised it falls partway into the Country genre, which is not somewhere I usually venture. That said this is a fantastic CD - every track is moving and summons up haunting images in my mind. Recommended to anyone regardless of what music you normally consider you like.

The album is built up by a slow lingering rhythm, which, even in somewhat faster tunes, never leaves the Earth. The sound is almost romantic, the songs are performed thoughtfully throughout the track list.

Interesting musical arrangements good musicianship good lyrics and an unusual female voice all combine for one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. Not the sort of music to make the party rock but in the right setting its great.
