Cattle: A Handbook to the Breeds of the World Hardcover – 29 Mar. 2007

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

This book describes in detail nearly every variety and breed of cattle in the world, both domesticated and wild. It includes most of the newest breeds [especially the zebu/taurine crosses and bison/cattle and yak/cattle hybrids] and many important extinct breeds. The early chapters trace the domestication of cattle, looking more closely at the now extinct ancestral aurochs, and how different types and breeds gradually evolved, while later chapters study wild species of the cattle family and some of their unusual interesting domesticants, especially in Asia.

very good value for money
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 December 2011
This comprehensive guide to cattle is an essential addition to anyone with a serious interest in cattle, whether or not they intend to keep any. The information on each breed is well researched and reliable and the paintings are of near photographic accuracy. My only critisms are that in the section on the Welsh Black, Bolian Gwynion is referred to as the White Welsh instead of Belted Welsh which is how it is defined in Appendix IIIb. Another misprint is that some of the maps have their symbols marking the places of origin of different breeds in the wrong position, usually too far left.

These nitpickings aside, I personally found this book immensely pleasing. It in detail covers the complex histories and relationships of many of today's modern breeds as well as covering the more obscure and rarer breeds that are on the brink of extinction. Also covered are many of the different variations that can make up a breed.

Definitely worth five stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs pictures and more structure, but not bad.

The research made on the breeds is interesting and the information is satisfying depending on your needs. I think it needs more structure and most important PICTURES. Not every breed has drawings making it limited. I do not recommend it. Poorly organized, look for a breed and you will find in the index 15 places where the breed is mentioned in the book, so have patience searching for it's full description and when you find it don't expect to have the drawing next to it.
