McKay is a young harpist who is equally at home in traditional Scottish music sessions as in a music academy, which is why she can fuse sophisticated arrangement & composition skills with pure folk music forms. For the most part, she plays in folk groups (e.g. Fiddler's Bid, based around the Shetland Islands; McKay herself is a native of Dundee) and in a dynamic duo with fiddler Chris Stout (another performer with a similar set of skills). But this debut recording shows why she not only has the capacity to be a dynamic solo performer and composer, but even, to some extent, to be something like a band leader too. The album clocks in at just over 40 minutes but each of the tracks shows an aspect of her musical artistry that is open to development. The arrangements are such to emphasise the harp playing as an essentially solo performance instrument and while four musicians are listed on the front cover the accompanists appear only on select tracks when necessary to enhance the arrangements.

The first two tracks, 'Hill of Tara' and 'The Bonfire', are original tunes in a traditional format (reels) with the added feature of syncopated playing from McKay and double bass playing from Matt Baker (who appeared on Luke Daniels' 'lost music' record) that gives the tunes a fresh compositional twist (I'm reminded of Chick Corea & Stanley Clarke's duo performance "The Hilltop", which is akin to a Celtic style tune on Corea's most popular jazz-fusion album, "My Spanish Heart").

Next up is 'The Swan', named after a Cutty Sark upon which the tune was composed, which is a pretty tune of McKay's that has been published.

Mostly gentle modern folk music, I've heard Catriona McKay and Chris Stout playing in Rothbury and Sheffield where they were outstanding and ever so lively. This is an older recording which is mostly softer and slower, but it's good and her/ their style of playing is lovely to hear.
