Romantic comedy starring Jennifer Garner. Grey (Jennifer Garner) is devastated when the man of her dreams, Grady, dies only a few days before they were to be married. With her wedding turned into an impromptu funeral, Grey is emotionally devastated but has to deal with the practicalities of her new life alone, including moving out of the house she shared with Grady. Short on cash and in need of emotional support, Grey moves in with two longtime friends, sloppy but philosophical Sam (Kevin Smith) and well-meaning but tightly wound Dennis (Sam Jaeger). As time passes, Grey discovers that Grady had a secret life he never shared with her and as she tries to come to terms with the past of her former fiancé, she struggles to put her life back on track.
Jennifer Garner's lips grow more Angelina-esque every year. In the romantic comedy Catch and Release, Garner (Alias, 13 Going On 30) plays Gray Wheeler, a young woman whose fiance dies unexpectedly before the wedding, leaving Gray unable to afford her home--so she moves in with her fiance's best friends, Sam (Kevin Smith, director of Clerks and Dogma) and Dennis (Sam Jaeger, Lucky Number Slevin). But the presence of another old friend named Fritz (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood) leads to the unveiling of a secret: Gray's fiance had a child with another woman.
Catch and Release lacks the clear story structure that most romantic comedies are built on, but trades it for a richer sense of the ambiguities of human relationships. Garner, though lovely and personable, is a bit bland--fortunately, she's surrounded by actors with all kinds of edges, including Smith (who shows an unexpected and uncloying earnest side), Fiona Shaw (from the Harry Potter movies) as the fiance's grieving mother, and Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), who demonstrates once again her powers as a fearless and surprising actress. Catch and Release is an uneven movie, with a remarkably elegant visual style that sometimes clashes with the workman-like dialogue, but it can't be written off as the same old Hollywood claptrap. Though a happy ending is inevitable, the path it takes has some surprising turns and flashes of unexpected emotional depth. --Bret Fetzer

The right people find eachother in the end - no surprise there, but "Catch and release" has an original take on the romantic comedy. Gray has lost her fiancée and is thrown into the practical problems this ensues. She can't offord the house they were moving in to together and ends up in a house with three of her late fiancée's friends.
What raises this movie above the generic romantic comedy is the real feel it has. The characters aren't complete strangers who walk down the sidewalk and suddenly can't their eyes off each other. The characters in "Catch and release" haven't really chosen each other, Gray's late fiancée and a dash of circumstance bring them together.
Furthermore, the characters are very rounded, lovable and despisable at the same time. The entire cast really encapsules that fact. Great movie!
I had not even heard of this film until a few months ago and certainly don't remember it being on at the cinema. After reading the bad reviews and criticisms aplenty directed at Catch and Release I watched it not expecting to like it but boy was I wrong.
Firstly, I can only imagine that this film was seriously under marketed, probably wrongly as a romantic comedy. It is not a romantic comedy. It is a lot of things with a little dash of humour in which makes you smile to yourself at times but IT IS NOT A COMEDY!
Remember Tremors, a cult classic? No one had even heard of that when it came out originally - sadly another undermarketed/mis-marketed film - but now it's huge and has spawned 2 sequels and a TV series!
Sadly, I fear that people expected this film to be different than it is. That simple misconception could well have been its downfall.
Has the general public become so numbed by films with massive explosions, copious amounts of violence and incessant swearing that we can no longer enjoy touching, emotional films like this one? Or is it that we are so used to the same old `rom-coms' that Hugh Grant and the like spew out year after year that we are scared to appreciate something with a different feel to it?
To put it simply this film is beautiful. It's moving, sad, romantic, painful, sweet, good natured and humorous at times and in the end it teaches us that there is hope.Read more ›
When I eventually gave in and watched it I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole film! It's safe to say that this film is captivating! Jennifer Garner played her character in such a way that I felt everything she was feeling! I got butterflies and just couldn't look away! The comedy aspect of the film kept me highly amused and I really giggled at parts!
Once I'd watched the film once, I watched it again every night for the next week because I loved it so much and got something new from it everytime I watched it!
After watching it endlessly I bought more copies for my friends for christmas and they all loved the film almost as much as me!
I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a good old chick flick! Even if you're doubting this film because of how it looks I would urge you to give it a chance!!
Mainly cos it's not the predictable type of film from the background of...wife loses fiance, finds out he was 2 timing her, has to move out of house cos of money problems...etc.
No...it could easily have made the gang of lads she is forced to live with (friends of her dead fiance) stereotypical...but instead opens them up to being more than...the overweight bearded daft one, the handsome womaniser, the loser, the mistress she didn't know about turning up to try and grab some money for the kid she has. You end up liking all the characters and accepting their flaws.
Well I did anyway.

The film has a good premise for the film but is poorly executed. Apart from the twist relatively early in the film, the rest of the film is average and is that's neither romantic... Read morePublished 12 months ago by Just Your Average Reviewer
