Product Description

Boasting a brilliantly sinuous plot with a startling denouement, this supernatural thriller marked the directorial debut of Gordon Hessler, best-known for his work on the enormously influential series Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and cult horror duo The Oblong Box and Scream and Scream Again. Featuring an outstanding central performance from Gary Merrill a regular guest in both Hitchcock series Catacombs is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

Money and power have brought Mrs Garth a charming husband. But despite her beauty and intelligence, she receives neither his loyalty nor his love; instead, he is infatuated with her young niece. Mrs Garth domineering ways have also alienated her only secretary, Richard Corbett. In her safe she holds cheques once forged by Corbett and, while she is alive, he must remain within her service. To gain their freedom, the two men contemplate murdering Mrs Garth. One weekend their plans become reality with chilling consequences.

This is an excellent, mid 1960's British film (1964). This little gem is 86mins long and is b/w. The storyline/plot is excellent - it's packed with suspense and it's very well acted by the cast - absolutely top notch as is the script. The transfer is fantastic, it's crisp and dynamic all the way through. The music score does its job perfectly well - very taut. As for special features there's a stills gallery containing over a hundred on and off set stills of the cast and a couple of the original poster work too. Overall, a truly excellent film - highly recommended. 10/10.

Catacombs is not a film I had ever seen before. The publicity images for the movie give the impression it's a horror film and it has to be said it has some spooky moments. In reality it's about a group of nasty people out for what they can get from an even nastier individual. I enjoyed it greatly, good acting and a well made film with plenty of twists in the plot.

The DVD from NETWORK is a first class transfer, 1.66.1 ratio with crystal clear picture (B/W) and clear sound. An Image Gallery and Promo material are the usual only extras. No subs. The film itself? I confess I had not seen it before and was curious. I am glad I got it tho if you are a fan of Jimmy Sangster you may be well ahead of the plot. A miscast Gary Merrill is married to Georgina Cookson (who steals the film with a glorious OTT performence). She is a bully but very rich and powe5rful. They are not happy. Into this mix comes sexy niece Jane Merrow and she and Gary....well...you got it. Murder follows and there are some good moments and even a shock or two. Yes, it is a bit dated now, so perhaps a bit slow, but it is unpretentious entertainment, well acted and directed. At 88 mins perhaps 6-7 mins too long but I'm not complaining. Fans of this kind of "B" movie (Murder with twist) should enjoy it. (on a very personal note I felt someone like Lee Paterson was more suitable than Gary who was 50 and looked 60 when he made this.)

This a tense film, without being violent or having explicit sex.
Why it got a X certificate is beyond me.
The transfer is good. Sound quality good.
A twist at the end. I wonder if you will spot it?

A really excellent British film of crime and suspense, and released in 1964. The film has a simple, yet intelligent story, with a similarly surprising and good ending, and a small crowd of very good British actors. A film directed by Gordon Hessler is closer to a Hitchcok like style than to Hammer gothic horror movies. I really agree with most other reviewers in that this one is an excellent very little known film out of England. Indeed, this film is hard to find in the US.

Technically, a nice, crisp clear image in standard format DVD, likely the format of the original theatrical release. The film is a Black and White format that runs for 86 min. Audio comes in English, with no subtitles. The English audio is extremely clear though, even for a non English speaker. Extras include the trailer and an image gallery only. In case someone cares, the DVD is PAL, region 2.

At last , after 50 years (because of copyright reasons ?) this masterpiece , which could have been made by Alfred Hitchcock , is released on legal DVD . It's an excellent thriller with some horror moments , especially during the last 40 minutes . It has reflections of "Psycho" and "Les Diaboliques" . This time not a murder under the shower or in the bath-cup , but in the washing stand ! But , is the murdered woman dead or not ?
Like I said , the second part will give you the creeps !
I watched this movie in the cinema in the year 1966 and for me it was the best one during that year , until "Psycho" came along ! ( Eight months later )
Excellent quality , but unfortunately no subtitles , not even English for hard-hearing.

A rare and enjoyable little thriller which works quite well but never really fully engages you in its devious plot. That said the print is visually excellent and the sound is okay although the music track shows clear signs of age. Gary Merrill (Mr Bette Davis) lacks the charisma necessary to be convincing as the husband and Georgina Cookson is just a little too arch as the wife - but that said it's well directed, quite effectively plotted and certainly worth a look. Reminiscent of Jimmy Sangster's work for Hammer, Catacombs is a fascinating new addition to the DVD library!

Purchase was smooth and easy and delivered in good time - would happily purchase from this supplier again.

As for the film, I haven't watched it yet but suspect it is a fairly typical movie of it's time. I bought it as my Dad is in it and I believe was a forerunner to Hammer House of Horror so will probably settle down in front of the telly on a rainy Sunday afternoon soon I reckon. If you are an HoH fan or like British horror/suspence movies from the 50's and 60's then you will most likely enjoy this film I suspect.
