She takes you through different stages of a cats life and different behaviours using case studies and tales of her own cats very effectively. It's given me loads of food for thought and is the first book on cats I have read that I really feel I have learned something from.
The two cats we got were brother and sister and had previously been kicked and hit by humans. The male seemed to settle in OK but the female was very timid and would hide away; and the male showed the same behaviour signs as the author states are domination and bullying (sitting in dominating positions such as between the female cat and food or the dirt tray etc.). We decided to take him back to the cat rescue. Luckily we changed our minds when we got there and decided to take him back home. Over the next week we watched the cats carefully it and it became clearly apparent that rather than dominating the female our male cat was trying to coax her out into the room.
Both cats have now settled in and are happy and content yet had we gone by what was written in this book we would have separated them and only kept the female and both the cats and us would have missed out on the relationships we have built up. Given his past I dread to think how our male cat would have coped with going back to the cat rescue alone and without his sister for company.
This is a real "Must have" item for anyone who has ever tried to figure out their beloved furry friend.
Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but definately unputdownable!! A brilliant read.
There is a saying: "The Egypyians worshipped cats as Gods. Cats have never let us forget this". Believe me, it's true.
All cat owners (borrowers) should own this book. It's funny, sad, insightful, educational, and an amazing glimpse into the mind of one of the most stunning creatures on this planet. After reading this, you will never look at your cat in the same way again. Outstanding stuff from a great writer.
