To my knowledge there are no better guides to the castles and tower houses of Ireland than this five volume series that includes this one on Leinster. Published in 5 volumes by Province viz. North Munster, South Munster, Leinster, Connacht, and Ulster, all Ireland's counties are thus covered in the form of county gazetteers. ALL extant castles are included, even the former sites of castles are listed, likewise all known insignificant and not so insignificant ruins. The coverage is quite staggering, most have a photo, and/or plan and elevation view, together with quite comprehensive written architectural and historical descriptions. All castles are accurately located with 6 figure Ordnance Survey (Ireland & NI) grid reference, although I have noted errors with some of these, easily corrected by OSI's online mapping. I have photographed these buildings over the years (there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of them still in existence) and many can also be seen from the country roads that criss-cross Ireland - some can even be seen on Streetview now! For the field study of these fascinating buildings, I wouldn't consider using any other guides - thoroughly recommended.

Best part of Mike Salter's book, apart from the knowledge and experience he brings to his descriptions of these mostly obscure and neglected sites, is that the book itself is compact and pocket sized, light and easily legible; he includes ground plans, a good index, and lots of photographs .
Very highly recommended.
