'Carved In Bone' is a simply enchanting album. Subtitled 'contemporary rural music from Shropshire' it is every bit true to its word evoking thoughts and feelings of the countryside, heritage, nature and belonging. With a voice sounding like a mixture between Phil Oakey of the Human League (only with a much warmer tone) and the lesser known but equally wonderful Ben Fairlight (check out his 'A Year In The Life of Life' album on Bandcamp) Jonathan sings every word with a combination of feeling, connection and as if he was a bard from long ago. Aided by the equally majestic and heartfelt vocals of Paloma Trigas on a number of songs, 'Carved In Bone' is essential 'listening music' and as such has the power to grab and hold your undivided attention from start to finish - no listening to the radio or reading while this is on!

If you don't believe me take a listen to the sweet harmonies on 'Bonnie White Horseman' or Jonathan's impassioned vocals on 'Faint Failing Light' and the title track and then tell me you are untouched. Folk music is something rather new to me and I am still learning how to fully appreciate its spiritual power but this album is like plugging your heart directly into the source of human power and as such I will be listening to this CD for many, many years to come...

Dai Jeffries Rock and Reel ****

Jonathan likes to let his music speak for him, so much so that the few words on his album pack are almost indecipherable. There is no website to sing his praises: the music is his only statement. It's not his first record, however, but he gave up the mainstream music business long ago. Carved in Bone took almost fifteen years to come to fruition and then only after much persuasion by the friends who accompany him on the record.
This feels like a very intense, personal album. The opening track, `Canticle', is very catchy with Chris While's backing vocals soaring over Jonathan's deep rich voice. They then duet on `Bonny Light Horseman/My Grandfather the Boy' before things get more complicated. `The Heron, the Stickleback and the Shrew' is an ecological song of great power and `Strange Meetings' is strange but with a great hook.
Joe Broughton produced the album and is a key component, forming a string quartet with Paloma Trigas, Helen Lancaster and Emma Capp. The other distinctive sounds are Kevin Dempsey's guitar and Tom Chapman's cahon, but Jonathan's words and voice carry the day. Carved in Bone is a unique record.

Andy Fyfe, Q Magazine ****

Touched by the hand of Woody (Guthrie) is Jonathan Day, the great man's biopic inspiring the semi-reclusive folkie to leave University and live a peripatetic life. Carved in Bone is his third album but the first for many years. A shame; we could do with more of his poetic, elemental lyrics in the world. Oh well, good things come to those that wait.

Kevin T. Ward, Living Tradition

"Contemporary rural music from Shropshire" is Jonathan Day's synopsis of this new release after many years away.

Saw jonathan Live at Alexanders in Chester, not really knowing what to expect. He produced a brilliant performance containing many of the song in this collection. Excellent Musicianship and he has the magic to insrtill real feeling into the songs. He even did a cover of Nick Drake's Northern Sky, which I would normally regard as not possible, but was able to carry off the difficult feat with some aplomb. Excellent vocal ability combined with really good songs. Bought the album there and tnen. I recommend this very highly.
