This great CD has lots of music from the Carry On films, and it is the REAL music too. Not some, half-baked MIDI-style imitation. The early B&W movies are represented strongly, as are classics like Carry On Doctor and Cleo. I crave a second volume for tracks from Carry On Screaming with the nice little homages to Steptoe and Z Cars. Terrific stuff. I particularly liked the music from Doctor, and I can almost "see" good old Babs sauntering down the hospital corridors long before her Peggy Mitchell days! Oh and Bernard Bresslaw - "DING DONG!"
Great!

Edmund Crispin, whose real name was Bruce Montgomery, was one of the later representatives of what might be considered the “golden age” school of English detective novelists. He wrote a series of crime novels featuring his amateur sleuth, Professor Gervase Fen, which began appearing in the mid-1940s, starting with The Case of The Guilded Fly. Nine volumes appeared between 1944 and 1953. But then there followed a long gap until 1977 when the final Crispin novel, Glimpses of the Moon, was published. Why the silence?

The clues are to be found within the novels themselves. It’s evident from all of them that the author has an interest in music. But two in particular, Frequent Hearses and Swan Song, have a musical backdrop. Swan Song (1947) explores the world of opera during rehearsals for a production of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nuernberg, while Frequent Hearses is set in a film studio, and includes among the characters Napier, a composer of film music. By 1950, when Frequent Hearses was published, Montgomery was busy elsewhere, also establishing himself as a composer of film music. The best known of these are his scores for the four Doctor in the House series of comedy films, and the first six Carry On films.

“In his concert works,” writes Crispin, “Napier was a somewhat acrid modernist, but like most such composers he unbuttoned, becoming romantic and sentimental when he was writing for films.” In letters to his friend, the composer Geoffrey Bush, Montgomery often complains that writing film scores in order to make money is too hard, taking up all of his time and distracting him from more serious composition. “I’m mortally sick of comedies,” he wrote at one point. He eventually composed the scores for nearly forty films, including documentaries and thrillers.

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra re-recorded album conducted by Gavin Sutherland is brilliant and faithful to the originals. The quality of this music is amazing and the orchestration has the original spirit of the series. Carry on Cabby extended suite is my personal favorite & Carry On At Your Convenience is fantastic. A true credit to Eric Rogers & Bruce Montgomery by Gavin Sutherland and City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

Carry On with one of the best re-recorded albums in ANY life time.

Generally the modern setting films seem to fair better, possibly because the band used had a fair size brass section that could recreate the jazzier arrangements, but was perhaps a couple of violins short of getting impressive washes of strings and which sound a bit light as a result (especially in Cabby, which is otherwise good).

The actual track listing sequence is as follows:

Carry On Camping Suite
- Main Titles
- Come To Paradise / main character themes
- Goings-On!!
- Reconciliation (for the time being) & End Titles
Carry On Suite (based on music in Sergeant, Teacher and Nurse)
Anglo-Amalgamated Fanfare #3
Carry On Cabby
Carry On Theme
Carry On Cleo
Anglo-Amalgamated Fanfare #1
Carry On Jack
Carry On Behind
Anglo-Amalgamated Fanfare #2
Raising The Wind
Carry On At Your Convenience
Carry On Up The Khyber
Carry On Doctor/Carry On Doctor Again Suite
- Main Titles
- Life In Fosdick Ward/Romance In X-Ray
- Chaos!!
- New Nurse In Town - Or Is She?
- End Titles

In general this is a fine compilation of the themes, the selection hardly overlapping with the slightly superior What a Carry On! album and so this would therefore would make a good companion purchase.
