By Marty From SF HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on 16 Dec. 2002
Format: DVD
The public tends to forget the impact that the Carpenters had in the 1970's - selling over 100 million records. This set contains wonderfully remastered hits with the videos that accompanied them. Mind you, this was before songs were made into videos and the outfits were frightening (but then again, what were we wearing back then)? You can blame the A&M executives for the wholesome appearance of the duo. They thankfully were other than they appeared.
The music is the main focus here and the videos are merely the means to show them. Sure, Karen's apparent health varies from song to song, but the voice is always strong.
"The Carpenters: Close To You" makes a great video companion piece and sheds an enormous amount of light on who the Carpenters really were. However, if you just want the music, stick with this video. It's full of memories and great songs!

Just in case like me you thought you might be getting a video version of the 'Gold' CD, you won't. The DVD product description unfortunately doesn't list all the songs featured. These are, in running order:

1. We've Only Just Begun
2. These Good Old Dreams *
3. Superstar
4. Rainy Days & Mondays.
5. All You Get From Love Is A Song *
6. Top of the World
7. Ticket To Ride
8. Only Yesterday
9. Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft
10. Beechwood 4.5789 *
11. Touch Me When You're Dancing
12. Hurting Each Other *
13. Please Mr Postman
14. There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over The World) *
15. (They Long To Be) Close To You

If you're particularly interested in music content then you might like to see a comparison with the two 19 track CD's of the same name and general appearance as the DVD which I also own. So:

What Tracks Does The DVD Have That The CD Doesn't?
There are 5 of these marked with a star (*) against the listings above.

What Tracks Does The CD Have That The DVD Doesn't?
There are 10 of these shown below:

Yesterday Once More
Goodbye To Love
It's Going To Take Some Time
I Won't Last A Day Without You
For All We Know
Jambalaya (On The Bayou)
I Need To Be In Love
Solitaire
This Masquerade
Sing

Between the two products If you're wanting to buy a single item that provides the best range of Carpenters music, the CD offers better value than the DVD and features a lot more familiar hits.

Fantastic DVD that makes you remember just how good the Carpenters were, and just how bad the music video production was in those days. Plenty of memories, though, especially if you're from that era.carpenters

This DVD contains around fifty-five minutes of very good 'CD quality' music reproduction of some of their greatest hits. The picture quality doesn't match the sound but it is good to see Karen and Richard performing their songs of 'thirty something' years ago. What a voice Karen had, and the musical arrangements by Richard were ahead of their time. For the price, this is good value for money for any Carpenters fans. Recommended.

Although the cuts from one song to another are not always clear - different times of filming, different qualities - the overall effect is great, giving a very good display of their performances, a pleasure to see and listen to.

I like this because you get to see videos of Karen ,while the music is straight off the CD. So you get the studio version of the songs that you are used to hearing on the radio etc. coupled together with vintage video.

As a previous review has said, the film footage shows its its age,but the quality of the music and Karen Carpenters voice is magical. It was such a tragedy that her life ended so soon. You can only image the songs that got left unsung, as talented as Richard was he couldn't make up for the loss of his sister afterwards in his own career.

Any one who was ever remotely a fan of the Carpenters will love this album and its a worthy addition to any collection of some of the best music of the 20th century.
Your money won't be wasted if you buy a copy.
