As a sequel to Carnal Beginnings, my expectations for CARNAL INNOCENCE were set very high. I knew that author Reily Garrett would deliver a thought-provoking story featuring the BDSM lifestyle.
For all intents and purposes, CARNAL INNOCENCE seems to accomplish that goal. Take a woman with special genetic talents and place her under the protection of a resourceful Dom. So far, so good. The storyline starts getting complicated when it becomes apparent that Callie is a complete innocent shielded from the world. To automatically think that she would accept the BDSM lifestyle seemed rather incredible, especially in light of how much "safe, sane and consensual" is stressed by the Dom.
Adding genital mutilation only makes the storyline more complicated. In spite of the description, I couldn't quite get an idea what had happened aside from the piercing. Although I understand why the BDSM lifestyle might be attractive to someone who has undergone such a traumatic experience, the puzzle pieces just simply didn't fit.
While there is plenty of cloak and dagger suspense with Nate providing protection for Callie, too many areas remained undeveloped. I think the general premise of the storyline shows great promise, but this installment didn't meet my expectations.
Callie was raised in an experimental setting, probably due to her paranormal gifts that might be able to help 'someone' gain power. We're never really told who wants her, or why, although there is an aura of military surrounding the whole book. Nate is ex-military and after her 'handler' is lost, Callie must trust Nate to keep her safe.
Some of the BDSM is gratuitous in my opinion, but for the most part the BDSM doesn't add to or detract from the story line. It just is. I know there is one story by this author before Carnal Innocence and I'll have to read that one, so I can see if some of the loose ends are really things we learn from the first book in this series.
There are many ancillary characters who I'm sure will get a book of their own, and I'm looking forward to that! I'm hoping there will be some more back story in either the first book in this series or in books that come later. I'd like to know WHY Callie was raised where she was. Who are her parents? Are there others like her still being kept?
As you can tell, I'll keep reading this series! Thoroughly enjoyed the book.
The story itself was interesting. It interwove the paranormal and BDSM themes very well, however there were some loose ends that leave me wanting a continuation to the story. I also had a very hard time with the mutilation that is mentioned in the summary. I understand why it was in the story but it was still difficult material to deal with.
Overall, I loved the characters but the story left me with a lot of unanswered questions.
I am new to reading BDSM material so it was a tad confusing at points but I did get the gist of it. I liked how all of the sexual interludes were written tastefully and how Callie showed real emotions when she was in the club witnessing the lifestyle for the first time. I also enjoyed the fact that the storyline was about Callie's talent and solving a little mystery rather than all SEX like some other books I've read. I like to keep my mind busy and be able to picture what I am reading so that's a huge plus for me. Nate was very mature and gentle not overbearing and rough like a macho man. His character showed strength and weakness when he was rescuing Callie, I loved that there was a wo done it mystery along the way as well. Overall I enjoyed this book. There's a potential for a series here that could go on further adventures which is always good. This was the first of miss Garretts books I've read and id be willing to read some more.
