It's been a long time since we heard any new music from Michael Des Barres, which is a shame because as far as I'm concerned, he's something of a purveyor of quality. The ex-Silverhead vocalist fronted 70s rockers Detective, their first album remaining one of my favourites. Other highlights included Chequered Past, fronting the Power Station and issuing a great solo album after that, called 'Somebody Up There Likes Me'. Somebody writing this review likes him too, so I'm delighted that Michael is back with some brand new stuff.
Des Barres hardly stayed idle since 'Somebody Up There...' was released in 1986. He enjoyed an acting career with as many, if not more, high points on his resumé than his musical one, as well as staying active on the live scene with various bands, including his soul group The Free Love Foundation. A new album was something I'd been gasping for and finally, 'Carnaby Street' has arrived to slake my thirst.
Channelling the likes of Steve Marriott and Rod Stewart, Des Barres has created a superb classic rock album, forged from the furnaces started by bands like Humble Pie, Free, The Faces, The Rolling Stones... it's a glorious celebration of British rock, done authentically by a man who has been successful in the genre for decades and who was there when it all started. 'You're My Pain Killer' is a bluesy masterpiece of an opening, with Michael's vocal rasp in top form, setting you up nicely for the rollicking feel good fun of the title track. Here, Michael's lyrics transport you back to to the glory days when bands made magic in studios in a matter of days and the songs endured for lifetimes. He's taken the same approach, honing the tracks live on stage with his band of hand picked players and then cutting them in a studio in a week.

This release is an absolute gem.
The sound sends you back to when British Rock was at its best.
Michaels voice might not be as it was when he was with the outstanding Detective but his voice and sound of the band seem more relaxed and in many ways has improved with age.
Mix Rod Stewart in his early Faces days with a touch of early Zep,Sex Pistols and Detective and you produce a stand out in the crowd good old rock and roll release.
Why Michael Des Barres wasnt bigger way back when was a crime and how Detective didnt take the rock world by storm i will never understand.
It is difficult to pick a stand out track as they are all excellent with touches of rock, blues, punk and pop finely mixed to produce a nicely produced excellent release.
On saying that Carnaby Street and Little Latin Lover are stand out tracks.
I bought the cd/dvd limited edition direct from Gonzo Multimedia via Michaels site (a snip at £10.99 inc post) and am delighted with the audio and dvd footage.....extreamly well produced....well done Gonzo.
The dvd contains footage from his Silverhead and Powerstation days as well as tracks from the cd and an audio from the first Detective cd.
Buy now and put Michael Des Barres ...and the band back on the road to Brit Rock stardom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock As It Should Be 6 Feb. 2013
By Michael Cavacini - Published on Amazon.com
If you're in the mood for a raw, gritty, emotionally-charged rock album, look no further. Carnaby Street is the best rock album I've heard in years. It features the soulful, raspy vocals of Michael Des Barres, whose voice conjures up visions of Rod Stewart when he was in the Faces. And the musicianship throughout the album is also worth noting; each song has killer guitar work, lively drums and a pulsing bass. My favorite songs include: "Carnaby Street," "Forgive Me," "Please Stay," and the terrific bonus track, "The Key of Love." If you like rock music, you owe it to yourself to get Carnaby Street. You'll love it!

By Kim Beauregard - Published on Amazon.com

I've owned this album (CD) for less than a week and it has already become one of my faves! From Michael Des Barres incredible vocals (remember Silverhead?) to the tight arrangements - this CD has it all: hard driving Rock and Roll/Blues to intoxicating ballads - if you're going to purchase one album this year - let this be the one - guaranteed to please. You will NOT be disappointed!!! ' ¢Ü ¢¾ ' ¢Ü

4.0 out of 5 stars Listening a pleasure. 20 Sept. 2012
By CultoftheQuadrangle - Published on Amazon.com

If you know Michael's history, and give a damn, respectively, then this cd is an easy purchase. Lovers of all things Rock n Roll, Heavy Blues, and Expressions of hurt, pain, recovery and the like, will find much to revel in with Carnaby Street. One of rocks most powerful, and regretfully overlooked vocalists delivers right to the core on this disc. The ballads and rockers are a perfect example of why Michael Des Barres has endured all these years. In film, and in rock. He embodies class, talent, swagger and is a perfectionist (to his advantage). Had just about enough listens to 16 and Savaged? Perhaps youve had enough Detective? or Powerstation? Money Dont Come easy, and neither do Michael Des Barres records, so if youve been eagerly awaiting something more from the Marquis; one more song? just one more performance? Michael finally released this new album. Instant favorite. Instant Classic. Youll be very happy with this music. I am.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Return of Rock 'n Roll 12 July 2012
By Richard M. Stellar - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Carnaby Street is a testament to rock 'n roll. I can't put it more succinctly than that. Des Barres' band is so freaking tight and ballsy, it's a perfect counterpoint to his vocals. The songs are for the most part, catchy, memorable and in some cases topical! Little Latin Lover could be the anthem to thousands of Los Angelenos who fall for sultry latinos, only to be caught in the sights of Immagracion! You're My Pain Killer is the antithesis to Addicted to Love while punching it in the face. "When I look in your eyes I am anaesthetized".... so English, so Carnaby Street it sounds like Prince Philip courting some countess in a crack den. Unbelievable.
