Lovely book, how nice to have our Celtic heritage in such a fascinating two volumes. Prayers and charms and many other things, It is an interesting mix of both our Celtic Pagan and Christian origins. I can't say more because I have only just scratched the surface. There is an extensive contents listing and after notes but sadly no index so having to use lots of bookmarks and make notes of where to find things. Hence four and not five stars

This is an excellent reprint at a very low price, the complete text of vols. 1 and 2 in one volume. The Gaelic and English texts are printed in parallel columns on each page instead of on double-page spreads as in the original, thereby saving a lot of space; they are in smaller type too, but perfectly readable. The English commentary and notes are full page in normal type. The text has been reset/rescanned somehow in sanserif rather than being a PDF-type reproduction, but it seems accurate and complete. It's well bound, as a large-sized paperback. Later volumes were added to Carmina Gadelica, but this 2-volume set was the original book.

Alexander Carmichael was an exciseman which allowed him to travel all over Scotland. From every place he visited he culled the prayers, hymns and more from the inhabitants. Being fluent in Englisbh and Gaidhlig enabled him to provide the words in both languages.
