An interesting read

Overall reflecting on this book after reading it I found the premise of the recurrence of the past really interesting to read particularly the resurfacing of crimes. I also enjoyed that Lawson’s reiterating of the crime which happened earlier in the book that the reader might have forgotten such as the murder of the newsagent and Max. Through the surfacing of the past and how it impacted on Jasper and thereby Kate, even though Jasper tries to stay away from the Families and the life his father left he cannot help but get wrapped up.

In keeping with the crime families, I believe that one of the strongest points of the novel (apart from Harry and Oliver’s brotherly relationship) is the flexibility in loyalties. I like that character like Don or Lawson underwent a fluid change and left an air of mystery as to who they are loyal and what they were going to do next. The muddiness of loyalties was really refreshing to read and helped in building tension in the book such as when Lawson rang Jasper to warn him about Nigel’s threats to Kate – that was very shocking to read.

There are such a vast number of characters particularly secondary character who is developed in great detail and enhanced the story! I really enjoyed reading Don and Lawson’s development, with the transition from good to evil and swift changing loyalties. Though I believe I would have liked more development with Joanne as compared to Don or Lawson she was underdeveloped.
Some of the backstories that were explained through flashbacks and conversations about Colin were slightly excessive.

The only aspect of the book which puts me off slightly is the treatment of women particularly from Jasper as well as Max. I understand that the language used does suit the aesthetic of the novel however I think in the first couple of chapters it is excessive and initially made me resent Kate and Jasper’s relationship. However, at the end of the novel, I thoroughly support their relationship as Kate became more independent and openly spoke her mind to Jasper as she informs him she will only stay if he ends his criminal life and gives back to the community.

Overall this book was an enjoyable read!

Enjoyable book with good pacing

I enjoyed reading this book! The book follows Jasper and Kate, and their relationship with one another, as well as Jasper's business and the drama that ensues with trying to one-up his enemies to get what he wants.

I found that the characters were believable, and I actively liked following them through their journeys together. The story was well-paced, and I found that if ever there was a moment that it felt like there wasn't enough forward movement, something else happened at just the right moment to carry it forward. It also felt like it was a well-developed story, without plot holes, and didn't seem to lack direction at any point.

I also enjoyed the different points of view that the story was told from. I found that it lent itself well to the book, with the reader getting extra information needed without there being an overload.

At times, I found myself getting slightly confused by the backstory that was presented regarding Jasper's family history. However, this was minor for me, and I found that I was able to get past this without difficulty understanding what was happening.

Overall, I thought this was a good book!

Amazing Book

This is the first time that I have read anything by Frances but definitely not the last. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more. There are twists and turns along with danger, betrayal, revenge and pain and I recommend that you read this book as it is so well written and worth reading.
