I am disappointed in this recording. I listening half way through and had to stop. I found Carmen's voice somewhat dark and "old", rather than the fresh and vibrant tone of a young and desirable temptress. Don Jose's "Parle-moi de ma mere" was loud and clear, perhaps a little strident at times, and seemed lacking in loving tenderness. It seems to lack the musicality and the sincerity of passion deserved by the drama. The interpretation by Julia Johnson and Placedo Domingo (Erato) is far more engaging and expressive. I found myself being analytical of the voices, rather than listening to them, and felt they got in the way of the flow of emotion. On a positive note, the recording engineering is good providing a good sound stage and dimension. I'd suggest listening to other recordings before making a purchase.
