The book is heavy going and takes the reader on what seems to be almost a day to day revisit of all the events in Elvis' life from his army days, through the sixties, the recordings, the movies, the comeback, the tours and the seventies, culminating with his last days in august 1977. And just about every living person in Elvis' life was interviewed for information by the author. An incredible project really.
Elvis comes across as a very real human being for the first time, and you can't help feeling that it could all have been different if only this and if only that. I also acquired a better understanding of the people around Elvis - the family, his over bearing manager, the record executives and Hollywood moguls, the entourage, and the ambitious doctors.
This is a monumental effort by Peter Guralnick and can easily be regarded as the best reference book for Elvis' post army life right up to the end. Having said that, I felt that it more than was necessary dwelling on the negative issues.
With just one or two factual errors, this is an essential and very detailed reference on the last seventeen years of Elvis Presley's life. A highly recommended book for the interested.
