Book Description

The Career Girls are back. Louise Bagshawe writing as Louise Mensch. At the top of her game.

From the Back Cover

From the bestselling Louise Bagshawe, now writing as Louise Mensch

The Career Girls are back. In Love. In Business. In the City.

Music mogul Rowena Krebs is now a legend - she's even made it to the Hall of Fame. Her old rival, now best friend, Topaz Rossi, is the designer clad top dog at American Magazines. Both women are happily married - and life seems sweet.

But things are changing: Rowena senses a shift, both in business and maybe on the home front. Topaz knows her circulation figures are dropping, but not what is wrong with her husband. And when you wear the crown, hidden enemies lurk in the shadows - waiting for the moment to strike.

Never women to be knocked aside, Topaz Rossi and Rowena Krebs are alive and kicking. And they're determined to show it.

Praise for Louise's fiction:

'Glitz, glamour, sex scandals... a lot of fun' Heat

When I heard this book was coming out, I re-read Career Girls, sixteen years after first discovering it.

Although the first chapter failed to grab my attention, by the time I hit chapter three, I was hooked. That was 24 hours ago and now I feel the usual bereavement after realising I have no new Bagshawe material to read.

As usual, Louise, please hurry up and write another book.

When I bought this book from Louise Mensch (former Louise Bagshawe) I was expecting to be taken by the story but for the first time, I struggled to finish this book. A little disappointed maybe her next novel be more thrilling and exciting.

So glad that Ms Mensch returned to Rowena and Topaz - Career Girls was my favourite of her offerings.

I am also baffled by the changes to the names of the characters (the Goldstein son becomes David from Jacob, Josh Oberman becomes Oberstein and so on) and I too felt this to be sloppy editing. I am sure Ms Mensch would have gone back to her original story so would be inclined to blame the editors for the changes rather than the author.

I much prefer this to the author's previous publication (Beauty) and really enjoyed being back with the Career Girls again. Classic Louise Bagshawe/Mensch.

I have read and loved Louise Bagshaw's books for many years, and so was delighted to see a new one on the shelf. I am sorry to say I was sadly disappointed, and will not be finishing this rubbish. I would recommend many of her previous books, but this one is going straight to the recycling bin. Appalling!

Storyline is classic Mensch, a diversion that is an enjoyable beach read, although I thought the Topaz/Joe storyline was off. My main disappointment is the errors, either in writing or editing, for two character names. Josh Oberman and Connor Miles from Career Girls became Josh Oberstein and Conrad Miles in Career Game. This could be limited to the digital edition, but I found it odd.

Even fiction needs to have the facts as factual when used, or else just make up some old nonsense and no one will be any the wiser.

When I find a fire escape in a Regency novel, or acts described as "chauvinism" in ancient historical novels (Nicholas Chauvin lived in the Napoleonic times), or a private telephone in a working class English house in the 1920s I cannot read another word and close the book as not worth another second of my time.

When I read about a character in Career Game riding a pure bred arabian stallion whose sire had won the Kentucky Derby, it was one such jarring error. Arabian stallions or their offspring are not eligible to run in the Kentucky Derby, it is a race for thoroughbreds only which with very few key strokes on the internet would have been evident.

There are two very strong leading ladies in Career Game, Topaz Rossi and Rowena Krebs, both at the top of their chosen careers but having some recent troubles with work. This is a book that starts slow but soon drags you into a very gripping and dramatic story with lots of ups and downs. I found myself smiling my way through a lot of the book, and even if you haven't read Career Girls, this can definitely be read as a standalone book.
