CAREER COACH is an excellent resource for people exploring the possibility of changing roles or re-entering the workplace after a break. Often job seekers want to rush into sending out CVs before they really understand what they have to offer and how that can be matched up to various roles. The exercises included in this book provide the reader with a way to start with their imagination and then gather the information they need in order to better sell themselves in this competitive job market. Also if you've ever found yourself on "Someday Isle" as in Someday I'll change jobs, then the section on Career Action Planning is a useful guide to creating some written goals that get you to move forward.
The contents of the book are carefully broken down into bite-sized chapters, so you can either run all the way through the book to get your mind into the right frame or dip into the book when you want to look up a specific topic. As with anyone, we all have key skills which we have acquired through life and work and it pays to look into your strengths and weaknesses and see where you can build up or start afresh. There are cleverly crafted exercises to work through, in each chapter, which can help you in your quest, such as; the skills assessment where you can highlight all your known skills from a table of words like, 'experimenting', 'guiding','creating' etc...maybe you can see skills there that you never even thought about?
You can even bring into the equation any hobbies and past-times which you enjoy and maybe want to take further where work is concerned. Many people have dreams of pursuing an interest as they may have become tired of there current job or career and want to do something that will give them more job satisfaction. There is so much to explore in this book that it is definitely worth reading. I'm sure many people will be able to move forward once they get their head around all of the information and possibilities, whilst being realistic about goals and choices.
Once I started to really engage with the exercises the questions asked made me think more about my job history and future very openly. The book takes a really direct route and gives you exercises that you wouldn't ever think of yourself (but wish you had!).
I'd never realised if I was employable and what my personal values are to a company but this book helped me choose what key skills I have and which ones I want to be central to my job. Career Coach gives you creative ways via checklists, drawings etc to deeply think about how your career has progressed so far and why! Especially in the current job market it's becoming more and more important to think about where and how you want to work. Excellent!
It's very easy to use and as you progress through the pages it really is like working with your own Career Coach. It challenges you, clarifies and confirms things for you, provokes meaningful personal reflection and develops confidence to move forward in your career.
If you're looking to identify the right career move and find a job you'll really enjoy, I don't think you'll find a better starting point than this.
