But then I love all Josh Lanyon's work. He has such an elegant style, witty and intelligent, and he plots beautifully as well. Most importantly for me though - above plot and style - he gets you to feel for his characters. The narrator Tim in this novella is charming and very human, plus it has an old Hollywood noir mystery story to unravel around the central romance. Lovely atmospheric read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Lanyon Winner!! 25 Feb. 2017
By Masselyn - Published on Amazon.com

I have no idea how she keeps doing it, but I find more and more of her stories are keepers! There have been a few (maybe only 2 out of the 24 I currently own) that I enjoyed but didn't fall in love with. The others I adore. Her characters are always fleshed out - even in under 100 pages she manages to develop people who you really come to know and care about. This short story was also really good in that it not only was a steady read (no dips or lulls) but I thoroughly enjoyed the dual mystery that surrounded the MCs (why they were at odds with one another) and the murder from 50 years ago. Sometimes you can say "oh, heck I know who dunnit" but in this short delight I honestly didn't know until very close to the end. Then again, I try not to think too hard with these short stories - I love to 'go with the flow' so I can try and enjoy the rush of solving the mystery right along with the MC. If you want to take a chance on a Lanyon story, this is one of the best (my other favorites are The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks, for something a little 'deeper' you have to try Stranger on the Shore, and for a REAL treat delve into the Adrien English series). You won't regret it!
5.0 out of 5 stars I love EVERYTHING he writes 2 Nov. 2014

I am beginning to think that Josh Lanyon can do no wrong. I'm not kidding. I love EVERYTHING he writes. How the hell is that possible? While I ponder that one, I will continue with my review.

We meet Tim, who's an author writing about a Hollywood star's 50 year old murder mystery. It's clear that someone, somewhere, isn't too keen on Tim completing his story. But while we're engrossed in the mystery of who killed the starlet, and the more recent mystery of who wants to shut Tim up, we're also trying to figure out what issue plagues Tim. It's clear that there's chemistry between Det. Jack and Tim, so why aren't they getting their 'love' on.
Well, I won't spoil it for you, but I do have to say that once we're told, it made me question how I would have reacted to being faced with such a situation. Both Tim and Jack were likable characters, and I have a thing with all of Lanyon's 'flawed' characters (ie. Adrien English), so I was Team Tim from the get-go. This is an entertaining, short read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another tour de force 8 Jan. 2015
By Claire - Published on Amazon.com

Josh Lanyon is absolutely one of the best writers out there, hands down. His stories are short and yet he manages to load them with feelings and real story lines and romance. It took less than 3 paragraphs for me to get hooked on this story, to love Tim and to empathize with his problems and to feel his ups and downs. I'd have liked to know a bit more about Jack but that didn't take away from the great emotional impact of the story. The mystery kept me guessing and as if that weren't already more than most stories deliver, Lanyon managed to convey a bit of the feeling of old time Hollywood. I can't recommend this one enough!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun! 2 Oct. 2014

Timothy North is writing a book about a 50 year old cold case. The murder of a beautiful actress may involve some of Hollywood's elite and the mob. A tarot card left on Tim's door, spooks him to the point that he asks for help from his ex, Detective Jack Brady. Tim's desire to solve the case opens up a Pandora's box that not only involves the murder, but his relationship with Jack. Does he really want to go there again?

I loved the Black Dahlia-esque story, with it's many characters, all vying for their closeup. The real story for me was Tim and Jack's relationship, their past mistakes and their current problems involving Tim's health problems. It does help that Tim seems to be a magnet for trouble, driving Jack to desperation.

Another well crafted story, with some sublime characters. The old Hollywood feel was done with great panache. Tim and Jack really got under my skin. I'd love to see them revisited one day.
5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read 9 April 2015

Like almost everything else Mr. Lanyon writes I really enjoyed this story. His MC's are usually very complex characters with many layers and this story is no exception. I was surprised to find one of the lead characters was dealing with a condition that often wrecked havoc on his life and added to his loneliness and anger over his last relationship. The relationship between the two men; however, was always interesting from the first moment of their reconnection. I love such character studies even over my interest in the plot. I got both the kindle and audio version and the narrator did an excellent job.
