Product Description

Product Description

Recorded in January 2008, this DVD features outstanding live performances of some of Cara's best-loved songs. Assembling some of the finest acoustic musicians from the Celtic world in a breathtaking location on the shore of Lough Foyle in Co Donegal, the results far exceeded all expectations. The recordings are pristine and the footage captures this remarkable, intimate setting beautifully. Watching this, it's no wonder that Cara has been critically acclaimed the world over for her innovative and heartrending renditions of traditional classics such as " Black Is The Colour" and " The Streets Of Derry" plus original songs including "There Were Roses", " Never In A Million Years", "Bold Jamie" and "I Wish You Well". Included is an exclusive interview with Cara, a journey to her family's roots, a photo gallery of the film shoot and a recording of "P Stands For Paddy" performed live in McReynolds Bar in Cara's hometown of Dungiven. Forget your typical live recording of a concert or show, this DVD raises the bar well beyond that. Multiple set ups, in amazing surroundings, Cara's Redcastle sessions in a whole new type of live DVD. If you buy one music DVD this year, it has to be this one. Cara's voice is mesmerising, whilst the quality of the musicians involved is second to none. Shot beautifully, with stunning production values, Redcastle sessions sets a new benchmark in the field.

Having read the previous reviews I decided to opt for a signed copy at a gig! For fans of Cara this is a must buy. In fact it would make the perfect end of year gift. This DVD is perfect for the Autumn & Winter nights. With the filming beautifully shot on the shores in County Donegal and the natural lighting effects on location it conveys a comfort and warmth. It is very well compiled with an excellent track listing. In fact the label Proper is very apt, as this is "proper" good stuff throughout.

Choosing the 'Play Program' mode (Full 80 Mins) you see Cara talk about her inspirations, family history and stories behind each of the songs as they come along. For repeat viewing you can choose "Play Songs Only" to just watch the performances - A nice touch. Filmed in an informal way these performances vary from just Cara & husband Sam Lakeman to both additional and a full array of talented musicians joining them. Whilst watching these I was surprised that some were done in one take, which Cara explained at the gig - How magical! The sound quality as you can imagine is first class and best appreciated through a good sound system/HiFi. The compositions are superb, Cara's vocal is exquisite creating music that "makes the soul rest". In fact long before the last track 'P Stands For Paddy' filmed Live in a Bar in Dungiven this DVD had reached parts that others don't!
Bonus Extra's include 1) Track by Track selection 2) A Photo Gallery Slideshow with photo's taken on location including the 2 new Lakeman twins at the piano with Dad 3) Switching between Surround and Stereo Sound.
The overall result is a sure-fire winner and even for an unsigned copy I heartily recommend! Enjoy :)

Beautifully filmed, very well recorded music of the highest order (no matter what language it is sung in - see other review!). Simply stunning.

This was my first taste of Cara Dillon since spotting her on BBC4 Transatlantic Sessions. There is a warmth in this DVD at Redcastle which shows well. The DVD is well produced, and sound quality is superb.
She is a beautiful singer, but I could quickly tire of her voice on CD.
On DVD, the visual performance enhances her greatly, and whilst not liking all of her chosen songs, the renditions of my favourites are such as to make the whole DVD very worthwhile. I particularly like the first five tracks, and her ability to capture the simplicity of songs like "Black is the Colour" in such a hauntingly addictive way is an outstanding talent.

I have just discovered Cara Dillon, wondering where I have been this past 18 years or more! The TV programme Transatlantic Acoustic Sessions introduced her to me. What a beautiful voice surrounded by expert musicianship, just magical. Not only is she stunning too, but her music is captivating and inspirational. A 'must have' DVD along with her entire output since I now have her complete collection including the Live at the Grand Opera House DVD and her 3 amazing albums on CD!

In January 2008, Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman assembled some of the world's best musicians to join them in a beautiful home set beside picturesque Lough Foyle near Redcastle in County Donegal. The resulting DVD is nothing short of spectacular, both musically and visually. The feel I get is that of being a very privileged guest in that warm home on a sun-drenched winter day, feeling the warmth of a crackling fire after night falls, and being allowed to hear the most sublime live music and also hear Cara talking about what her musical heritage means to her.

They say Cara Dillon is from Dungiven in County Derry, but she sings like she's right out of Tolkien's Rivendell. This is one of the best music DVDs I've ever watched in in terms of quality of performance. Kudos to Sam Lakeman for his outstanding work as musical director for this project.

What a voice! Great setting and band with one or two short interviews to break up the music, you have a great evening's viewing ahead of you. There are one or two genuinely moving moments in here, particularly the Bobby Sands song 'There were roses'. Don't miss out! If you like this - for a bit of a dance around try Live At The Minack [DVD]

I bought this after a friend recommended it. I have all of Cara's albums and am delighted with this as an addition to her first 3 albums. The tracklist covers a selection of her traditional renditions and her and Sam's original compositions. It has to be said that I've never seen a DVD set up this way before. I've only ever seen live concert footage. As a result "The Redcastle Sessions" has a much more relaxed and sometimes indulgent appeal ( in a good way). Cara's singing is as exquisite as ever and even more expressive than on some of her recordings and the musicians that she has brought together for the filming are incredible. The stand out tracks for me are " I Wish You Well", " I Am A Youth That's Inclined To Ramble" and "Bold Jamie". Interspersed between the songs are clips of Cara talking about her roots and family which is a lovely touch. There is a timeless feel to the whole affair and it's already become a favourite that i'm sure i'll revisit time and time again. It's extremely good and I can't recommend it enough.
