You will only get out of this book the introduction to captain underpants, so I would recommend buying more than just the first book. Also it is rather a short book to read.
I would recommend this book to 7 year olds and up (but not much older) or to be read to 6 year olds. Funny for boys, but some girls will appreciate this too.

My 60+ wife always has hysterics whenever she looks @ one

I definitely recommend these books to anyone for their kids.
