"One of "three outstanding books of 1939... perhaps most eccentric of all [is] Mervyn Peake's Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor." Peter Hunt, Children's Literature: An Illustrated History. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
About the Author
Mervyn Peake (1911–1968) wrote poetry and plays, was a painter and illustrator and designed theatrical costumes. But he is best known for his Gormenghast trilogy, which includes the novels Titus Groan, Gormenghast and Titus Alone. Several of his works have since been adapted into television and radio plays. Mervyn Peake also illustrated memorable editions of such classics as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Hunting of the Snark, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Treasure Island.

unexpected desire for - and pacification by - a sexually ambiguous 'Yellow Creature.'
A beautiful and strange book first published in 1939. A joy that Peake's own
handwritten text has been restored, lending the work a charming amateurism.
My only gripe, however, is the questionable necessity for the tinting of the images,
not conducted by Peake himself. Still, tastefully done for all that.
