Double bill of superhero action adventures based on the 1940s Marvel Comics series. In 'Captain America: The First Avenger' (2011) Chris Evans stars as Steve Rogers, who volunteers for a top secret military research project after being deemed physically unfit to enlist in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. The experiment transforms him into super-soldier Captain America, who - along with sidekick Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) - takes on the mighty power of Hitler's henchman Red Skull (Hugo Weaving). In the sequel, 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' (2014), set two years after 'The Avengers' (2012), Steve Rogers is now living in Washington where he is trying to adjust to modern society. When a fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is attacked he teams up with Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) to uncover a conspiracy and, with the help of the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), defeat a powerful enemy known as the Winter Soldier (Stan).

Winter Soldier is also avoids much of the alien/infinity stone plot line and instead creates an action movie which rivals some of the best (Bond, Bourne, Die Hard etc). In fact finding faults in this film just feels like nit picking.

The first film had its critics when it came out, but I found it a real delight. The CGI is now and again not the best, but the story is engaging, has a great story, and has a really fantastic cast, with Chris Evans obviously shining. (And also, a cameo from Jenna-Louise Coleman, doctor who's latest assistant).
The second film is more action packed and intense then the first, and is one of Marvel's best for a while. Though, this film is definitely best enjoyed after watching the first captain America, as despite there being quite a gap time wise between the two, it borrows a lot from its predecessor.
Overall, both films are a triumph, and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is a good price, cheaper then buying them both separately, and work picking up for any marvel fan.
Always quite expensive, so getting a double pack seemed the lowest cost way to get both films.
Cardboard slipcase over two standard bluray cases, one film per case. A/V quality is everything you'd expect from a modern film on bluray.
Compared to the hammy attempts at superheroes all the Marvel Studios films are great with good stories and excellent action.
Yet Marvel managed to explore this character in the best way possible, in the loosely-linked "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." While these movies are wildly different stories -- one is a period war movie, the other a contemporary political thriller -- they are held together by Chris Evans' powerful performance as the titular character, and a strong supporting cast that make Captain America able to take on the most malevolent foes.
The time: World War II, with the Nazi science division HYDRA menacing the allies. Scrawny asthmatic Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) desperately wants to defend his country, but he's too puny to enter the army. Dr. Abraham Erskine sees the goodness and courage in Steve's heart, and enlists him in a top-secret experiment to create a super-soldier. Within minutes, Steve has superhuman strength, speed and big shiny muscles.
Unfortunately, the army seems more interested in using the superpowered Captain America as a mascot than a fighter. Are you really surprised? This is the GOVERNMENT we're talking about. When Steve learns that his best buddy has been captured by the Nazis, he singlehandedly invades an enemy base and rescues dozens of soldiers. But this brings him to the attention of the Nazi super-science division Hydra, and its malevolent leader Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) -- who is the only other man as strong as Captain America.
Fast forward to 2014.Read more ›
