A hero who got his start slapping nazis during world war two. And then was brought back decades later. Unlike most heroes who did that it wasn't a retooling it was the original. As the initiated will know.
So to go for a present day set story or an origin that sticks to the original? They went for the latter. Which turns out to be the right choice.
We start with people in a frozen wasteland finding something buried. Sight of a symbol triggers lots of alerts. It's been buried for a while...
Back in the 40's nazi organisation hydra are on the track of a mystical object. Even more evil than the SS and fanatically devoted to their leader Johan Schdmit, hydra has designs of their own. And their tentacles are everywhere...
Over in New York Steve Rogers is a man desperate to do his bit and join the military. But when you have a list of ailments as long as your arm the doctors wont let you.
A chance encounter with one particular doctor gives him an unexpected opportunity....
As you may have seen from the trailers the first we see of Steve is a short and weedy guy. Chris Evans image having been digitally messed with in order to make him look that way. In the trailers it looked a bit too obvious but on the screen it actually works rather well and you do get used to it very quickly. There's only one short scene where his proportions do seem to change.
This being an original movie its then time for lots of exposition as we follow him through boot camp where his determination makes up for everything else, and catches the eye of Peggy Carter, british member of an elite science team. Hayley Atwell does well here thanks to the kind of writing that Rosie Huntington Whiteley might have benefited from on transformers dark of the moon.
The first action set piece - look for a former spook playing a different kind - brings the first glimpse of hydra technology, which has a pleasing art deco kind of look to it - and then Steve has to serve his country behind the frontline.
Until the chance comes to show what he really can do...
American flag waving and the like is something that many brits seem to be resistant to. But this isnt about that. It's about ordinary people rising to the challenge in dark times and just wanting to do their bit. And on that level it succeeds perfectly, creating characters you can root for.
The second action set piece does bring in extra members to the supporting cast - who will be familiar to comic readers - but whose exploits are confined to a montage action scene. One point where I might have enjoyed more detail.
Also back in the day captain america had a teenage sidekick, but that presumably might have looked too campy, thus james 'bucky' barnes is played and written rather differently here.
Hugo Weaving does provide superb villainy as Schmidt. He almost doesn't need the characters little secret. He and Steve are, as the script highlights on occasion, opposite sides of the moral coin. Both having a different approach to having gained great power. It's interesting food for thought.
To an extent this does act as a trailer for the forthcoming avengers movie. doing all at the end that needs to be done to get captain america into that, but it stands up well enough in it's own right to be an entertaining character story and action movie with it.
Marvel comics movies do continue their efforts to make it all one universe on screen. Look out for a certain industralist and an object or two that might seem familiar if you saw Thor.
Acting wise though the standout here is Tommy Lee Jones, as military man colonel chester phillips, delivering sardonic put downs with great aplomb. And doing some great acting with just body language in his final scene. I don't expect it would happen but he deserves a best supporting actor nomination come oscar time.
It's another capable and above average origin movie from a studio that are getting good at making them.
There is, as usual, something at the end of the credits. It's a bit more than just an extra scene this time.
Languages and subtitles on this dvd are as follows:
Languages: English, Hindi.
Subtitles: English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Hindi, Norwegian, Swedish.
The disc begins with some trailers but you can skip those via the next button the dvd menu.
There's a commentary from the director plus two of the production staff.
A ten minute long - and pretty good - documentary about the design of the Captain America costume.
A ninety second [approx] long trailer for the forthcoming Avengers movie. Which is mostly scenes from other Marvel moives. Epileptics beware some fast editing at the end of this.
And there's a trailer for a new Captain America video game.
Plus a trailer for a new Avengers tv cartoon series.
I watched the film on blu-ray and as far as comic book films go, it is entertaining, has a decent plot and likable characters even if your not a die hard fan of this genre. I am a fan of marvel's comics and have been for many years, so when they produce a film based around one of their iconic characters, it's always a bit of a nervous time to see what sort of job they have done. This is pretty good, with some nice touches for the fans and a not too much comic based gobbledygook for non fans.
Chris Evans does a decent job as Steve Rogers though he's not exactly as the comics portray and when in costume he just doesn't seem beefy enough compared to the other cast - Cap always stands out in the comics but here he's just a well muscled guy in a suit. A bit like the recent Thor film, it's very difficult to strike the balance with having someone genuinely huge to play the part who maybe will seem ham-fisted and leaden, as opposed to a muscular actor who may not be quite "comic book" enough. The supporting cast all do a good job as well and Hugo Weaving is good as the RS even going so far as to have an almost carbon copy voice of Arnold S.
That's the film, now the reason for an average mark!
The blu-ray and dvd both work fine but the reason I gave this review a 3 instead of maybe a 4 is the digital download. I have a very high end gaming laptop which also happens to be brand new and I just cannot get the download to work. Now, here's a caveat! I think this maybe at least partly Microsoft's fault and I cannot say if there would be a problem if I were using an Apple for this download. The main problem is that when you click to download, a screen flashes up to input registration details then after maybe half a second is replaced by a re-direction to a Microsoft partner site to upgrade the player. Ok, nothing wrong with that except I have the latest version of media player and also the upgrade screen is a dud. The upgrade button on it does NOTHING. You cannot avoid this screen, therefore you are stuck in a loop unable to download the film.
I purchased the 3 version set specifically so that I could keep a copy of the film on my laptop to watch when travelling etc. If I had just wanted to see the film, I would have only bought the blu-ray. I have never had this problem with other digital downloads.
Anyway, if you are either a fan of the comics or don't mind sci-fiction/fantasy films then you will probably enjoy this. I don't think you will be blown away by it but there is not much to dislike. If you're not engaged by this genre then you will probably find this to be a bit dull but who knows!!!
I will post again IF I ever get past the download problem. Thanks for taking the time to read this review.
Captain America follows these trends quite closely, leaving not an awful lot of shocks and surprises. Now, this may seem like a bad thing, but, actually, the film is pretty good fun to watch. The characters are all likeable, Hugo Weaving and Tommy Lee Jones add a certain heavyweight star-power to the proceeding. Perhaps the only drawback is that the film seems to take quite some time for Captain America to actually become `proper' Captain America, but then that leads me on to the movie's real purpose.
Like Hulk. Like Thor and like the Iron Man movies, Captain America is largely one giant prequel for the upcoming Avengers movie. If The Avengers wasn't being made, the whole of Captain America's story could probably have been shown as a flashback. It felt like - and this is a criticism of all the recent Marvel movies - they all seem to be holding their true potential back, presumably so as not to burn themselves out and leave nothing for the Avengers movie.
However, looking at Captain America as a stand alone movie, it was pretty good. I don't know much about the origins of the character (in other words I've never read one of his comic books), but I liked the way the story was linked to real historical events.
Good to see that computer-generated effects wasn't overly used (I'm still scarred by Transformers 3), so, if you fancy a decent romp, give the Capt a try.
