Product Description

Arm yourself! The 20 year wait is over as Bionic Commando swings back into action! The first true sequel to the classic 1988 Nintendo Entertainment System original, Bionic Commando sees the return of the bionically-enhanced Nathan "R.A.D." Spencer. Time has not been kind to Spencer: five years after his heroic defeat of the Imperials, he has been betrayed by the government he swore to serve, imprisoned for crimes he didn't commit, and sentenced to death.

On the very day of Spencer's execution, terrorists detonate a massive experimental weapon in Ascension City, unleashing an intense earthquake that has turned the city into rubble and wiped out its population. With the terrain in ruins and the city's air defense grid now in the control of a massive terrorist force whose goal remains unclear, the FSA have only one option left - a behind-the-lines assault.

It's the perfect job for a Bionic Commando!

  • Use the bionic arm to swing between towering skyscrapers at breathtaking speed, hook onto distant objects, zip up on hanging girders and choose your own route through the game
  • Gameplay that moves through horizontal and vertical environments - a 3D game that truly uses all three dimensions
  • Full multiplayer mode with rich stat-tracking to check whether you're a true commando or a lowly private
  • Use the power of the bionic arm - and of next-gen physics - to realistically throw massive objects, pummel opponents, whip enemies into the air, or pull the landscape apart
  • Arm yourself with a variety of weapons worthy of a Bionic Commando
  • Starring Mike Patton, the former lead singer of Faith No More, as the voice of Nathan Spencer

Fans of the original Bionic Commando will love this sequel and updates of the classic NES side scrolling platform shooter. Making the move to 3D easily, Bionic Commando captures the excitement of swinging and leaping across levels, fighting awesome enemies, and using fantastic weapons with their own unique benefits.

Unfortunately, the writing of the game leaves a lot to be desired. As is typical for modern games, "gritty" gameplay means that every five minutes or so, some character is dropping f-bombs into their dialogue. I'm a big fan of the f-word, but I feel like it's being overused in video games these days. If you want to make someone look "tough," just have them use the f-bomb more than the hero. This is a formula so stupid that only e-thugs will think it's cool.

The other problem is, the identity final boss is easy to predict if you've seen movie sequels of rebooted franchises. The writers couldn't think of an original way to revive the concept, so of course one of the the former allies is now a traitor. I don't mind cynical writing, but this same cliché was used in SWAT, Mission Impossible and Charlie's Angels, and it's been done to death. Seriously, there has to be a way to revive a franchise without using this tired cliché.

Setting that aside, the big "twist" about the origins of Spencer's bionic arm is just stupid, and they turn the whole FSA project into an experiment that would make Josef Mengele proud. So all along, the "trusted friend" was really just as bad as the Imperials trying to clone Hitler in the first game. *Sigh* It's been done to death, so to see it here after playing through the rest of the game was a major letdown.

But, ignoring the crap writing, the gameplay, music and graphics are all top notch, and even after completing the game, I'm going back in to play old levels. That's why despite my dislike of the plot, I give Bionic Commando high marks for great gameplay and for the replayability.

I thought I would try this game despite the lacklustre reviews because the concept of a soldier with a bionic arm that let him swing around and implement special attacks seemed intriguing. I was pleased that the bionic arm aspects of the game came up to scratch - it was great swinging over ravines and lakes and using the arm to hurl rocks and vehicles at enemies. However despite this the game was a major disappointment as it could have been so much better.

This is a console port and the tutorial refers to the console buttons exclusively. Whilst this is lazy it does not affect gameplay and the action wheel showing available console actions can be removed from the HUD in the options section. The controls are generally quite simple with most complex moves such as throwing enemies up in the air consisting of different combinations of just three buttons which was quick to master. I thought the final boss fight summed up the console bias though as it involved a quicktime event (button mashing) clearly designed for an Xbox controller not a keyboard.

The graphics are a mixed bag. Firstly the only thing you can alter is the gamma (brightness). This is ridiculous on a modern pc game and betrays the game's console heritage and is again lazy. Some reviewers complain that the lack of a vsync option in the graphics controls leads to excessive screen tearing. This is true but you can enable vsync in the Nvidia Forceware panel or the Catalyst Control Centre for ATI Radeons. In addition get Riva tuner (freeware downloadable from Guru 3D) and install D3D Overrider from the Tools folder as this needs to be used with vsync to enable triple buffering - the Nvidia and ATI Radeon control panel triple buffering options only work for OpenGL games.

To give a brief intro, the original Bionic Commando was a side-scrolling 8-bit game for the NES that was later remade into "Bionic Commando: Rearmed" and now remade completely into a fully 3D game, which is this current "Bionic Commando".

Plot:
Our story takes place in a future where soldiers are fitted with 'bionic' parts...until the public (somehow) decides they are a threat to society and votes to have them decommissioned.
Of course, the 'rouge' soldiers don't take too kindly to this and thus take over the city.
Here is where you, Nathan Spencer - a commando with a bionic arm, comes in to save the day as the last hope for the city under seige. Yeah right!
The plot is cheesy, laughable and not too entertaining...not to mention an uninspiring voice acting that tries too hard to sound tough.
You really can't believe much of the storyline but the good thing is, you don't really need to rely on the story that much to enjoy the game.

Gameplay:
In truth, your bionic arm is really the main star of the game; you use Nathan's extensible bionic arm to hold onto surfaces and swing (like spiderman if you will!), get from one place to another, and even fight off enemies.
And because the game relies to heavily on swinging and flying through the air, you actually get to play in a complete three dimensional world which is very satisfying!
The flying and swinging action never gets old...and is one of the main aspects of the game.

One thing I didn't like much is that the game is much too linear, and if you wander or swing too far off track, you mostly die instantly due to radiation (which kinda surrounds most of the world except your charted route).
Oh and btw, Nathan can't swim either.
