"Bel Canto Arias" is a fairly early example of Hvorostovsky's peerless art (be sure and get the coomplete CD). We all know from Met telecasts that he is a great actor. His stylistic and technical scope extends from the bel canto examples on this CD, displaying agility and line, to signature Romantic roles like Tchaikowsky's Eugene Onegin, in which technical prowess is balanced by dramatic intensity. He is now 50, still going strong. In my opinion he is the latest in a royal line of Verdi baritones that includes Cappucilli and Leonard Warren. (His successor in this repertory is already looming: Quinn Kelsey.) But he is also definitive in the repertoire on this album, as well as Russian roles (see War and Peace) and whatever French roles he undertakes. He is simply the greatest living operatic baritone.
