Manufacturer's Description

The PowerShot A470 offers a great value package without compromising on features. Available in four fun colours, it’s got everything your family needs to truly capture life’s special moments. Simply point and shoot for great results.

New for 2008, Motion Detection Technology is included in PowerShot models for the first time. This clever technology helps to combat blur caused by movement such as the kids running around, or by camera-shake as you take a quick snapshot.
Motion Detection Technology corrects just the right amount for blur-free images at maximum quality.

Face Select & Track also comes to the PowerShot A-series for the first time. Perfect for taking photos in crowded situations – like sports days, birthdays and crowded tourist attractions – Face Select & Track locks onto a face of your choice and continually updates the settings for the best results. Whenever you choose to take your shot, you get an in-focus, natural-looking face. The auto focus system has been enhanced on all three cameras, for improved performance in low light situations.

PowerShot A470 Highlights

7.1 Megapixels

The number of megapixels determines the amount of sharp detail a digital camera can record. With more megapixels, you can print at larger sizes, plus crop and enlarge without sacrificing quality. PowerShot cameras provide all the resolution you need for finely detailed, photo-quality prints with plenty of scope for post-shoot cropping.

The 7.1 megapixel CCD captures an extraordinary level of detail. Enlarge and crop as far as your vision takes you - you'll have all the detail you need for sharp, rich prints.

3.4X Optical Zoom

Get the shot you want with a powerful 3.4x Optical Zoom and genuine Canon optics. Not only does the zoom get you up close quickly, but Canon optical technology ensures that your shots are bright, clear, and alive with true, vivid color.

14 Shooting Modes

Canon digital cameras feature a huge range of preset shooting modes to help you get the most from every shot. The numbers define how many modes are available.

2.5" LCD Screen

The camera's 2.5-inch LCD screen gives you the big picture, whether you're shooting, reviewing or showing off your images. This extra-durable, high-resolution screen with tough scratch-resistant coating on the anti-reflective, PureColor LCD II screen offers a crisp, clear picture to make shooting, playback and using the camera's menu functions especially convenient.

Motion Detection Technology / High ISO/IS

Canon’s Motion Detection Technology uses several methods to detect camera and subject movement and set exposure accordingly. The brightness of subject and background, movement of the subject (based on comparison of frames over time) Face Detection information and camera shake information from the optical Image Stabilizer (IS) gyros are all taken into account. Where motion is detected the camera automatically selects the appropriate ISO level to achieve a shot with minimal noise and zero blur.

Face Detection Technology

Utilising the power of DIGIC III, Canon’s Face Detection Technology ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting subjects in the frame and setting the correct focus, flash level and exposure.

Red Eye Correction

The popular feature can now remove red-eye automatically during shooting, as well as in playback mode.

The massive processing capacity of DIGIC III paves the way for advanced features such as Face Detection Technology and Red-Eye Correction, while exceptional processing speed delivers outstanding responsiveness, fast and accurate auto focus and extended continuous shooting. Linking all key camera functions for maximum efficiency, all DIGIC processors achieve brilliant image detail, clarity and colour reproduction, while delivering long, high quality movies and more shots from a single charge.

20 FPS VGA Movies

Shoot super-smooth, VGA -quality movies with sound. In-camera editing gives you creative control
and slow-motion playback highlights every precious moment. Choose Long Play mode for stronger compression that allows twice as much video to be stored on your memory card.

Additional Features

Like a built-in photographer’s assistant, iSAPS is determining the optimal settings for each image even before you take a shot. It analyses the scene using PhotoSpace – an in-camera library of photographic data about the way people take pictures. It then controls the exposure, focus and white balance to ensure you get the best from every shot.

  My Colours
Add a personal touch to your image or movie with Canon’s My Colours. Choose from vivid blue for the sky, antique sepia for the portrait or classic black and white for the landscape. These creative options and many more – normally available only on a computer – can be applied directly from your camera, before or after the shot.

I bought this as a present for my 6 year old who is always grabbing my Ixus. At this price I was a bit dubious, but with the Canon name you can't go wrong. I almost got the A460 which had fantastic reviews but then saw that this had been released.

In summary it is a supoerb item. My son is able to take perfect pictures, with a good zoom lens and MP count, and an excellent screen. It also has face recognition which works very well. Response and start up times are very good.

The camera is a bit more plastic than an Ixus but still looks like a quality item, which it definitely is. Video is very good, and the box includes all the cables you need to play back on a TV.

I recommend getting a charger and some rechargeable AA batteries, and then you have a very good camera for a beginner or moderate user.

Very impressed, and I still can't believe the Amazon price, especially when you think it's posted free. Get one now!

This isn't the slimmest or tiniest compact digital camera, but it's still easily pocketable (jacket, not shirt!) and for the price, produces great pics in a compact form. The screen is a good size and nice and bright and the extra bit on the zoom makes a difference - most of the competition stops at 3x. The colour choice allows a bit of personalisation.

There are an amazing number of presets, but you won't need most of them, and the most important ones are the most accessible. Anyone unused to digital cameras or who is a bit of a technophobe upgrading might find the menus a bit of a fiddle, but for most purposes, they won't be used much.

Pictures are bright and sharp with comparatively little distortion. Colours are bright and zingy - not quite true - but the bit of extra saturation makes them very attractive.

All in all, a bargain little camera.

There are a wide range of digital cameras in this price brand, but I have to admit I am impressed with the Canon A470.

There is a large amount of easily available information on the model, so I will just list the main features I have impressed me the most.

Firstly whilst so many are getting smaller and smaller, this Canon has a nice comfortable fit in the hand, with not too many buttons and is not too fiddly to use.

The screen is of a good size which makes it much easier to frame the picture and also in bright sunlight, the image is still visible (unlike some screens).

I plugged in a 2Gb memory card (which was really cheap) so I can now take nearly 1000 pictures, in standard format, before I have to unload to my PC. Connection to the PC is very easy, just appears as an additional hard drive and you can drag/drop the files accordingly.

On the functionality side, the out of the box standard settings are more than adequate, but are easy to adjust. I managed to work most of them out without reading the manual.

As an overall package this camera is great!

Just bought one today to replace my Ricoh Caplio R4 that finally packed-in.
My R4 had 7x zoom, which I sadly miss, and wide-angle too.
But fed-up of digital cameras packing-in on me after only 2 years, when previously my old 35mm Olympus had been faithful for 17 years, I decided to go for a really cheap and cheerful one in the A470.

I saw it advertised in Argos for only £49 (sorry Amazon) and looked it up on WHICH? when I got home.
Which gave it a good review so, even though it is slightly bulkier than I'm used to and has only half the zoom, I decided to go for it.

So far the picture quality is far superior to the poor quality I'd unfortunately got used to.
I also like the photo viewer which rotates photos that you have taken vertically so that you always view them the correct way up. NICE TOUCH.

It was extremly easy to use without once referring to the instructions - basically just take it out of the box and start taking pictures.

In summary, it does exactly what it says on the tin and I like it.

I wanted to buy a camera that would take AA batteries rather than come with rechargeable batteries for 2 reasons. Firstly rechargeable batteries loose their capacity over time & secondly when I go on holiday I dont want to take the charger with me which adds weight. With AA batteries you have the option of buying disposable batteries & just throw them away after using them thus saving you weight on holiday.

The camera itself is very good. Size wise its not the slimmest but for the price its very good. You get 7.1MP for around £70 (what I bought it for from Amazon) The supplied memory card is only 32MB but thats to be expected with any camera you buy. Picture quality is very good for a compact & especially considering the cost. If you really need good quality then you would need an SLR.

Canon is a well known brand when it comes to digital cameras. I gave it 4 stars as I wish it would come with a case which it didnt but thats not a big issue.

Being pleased with the results of its predecessor (the Canon A460) we wanted another simple to use camera. On this occasion Amazon were under cut on price by a high street retailer.

The A470 has several additional features over its predecessor: smoother lines, 7.1 MP sensor, 2.5in screen, 4 digital zoom, face detection, antiblur etc.... As with the A460 the photo image is very good, improved resolution provided by the 7.1MP sensor. First impressions are that the camera seems to be rather power hungry (2700 mAHr NiMh AA batteries become discharged fairly quickly) although this might be due to exploration of all the camera features during the first few weeks. The A470 lacks the optical viewfinder of its predecessor which is very beneficial on a sunny day (the A460 permits the LCD screen to be switched off which helps reduces drain on the batteries); many compacts now lack the optical viewfinder.

The A470 is not as small as other fiddly compacts which is not necessarily a disadvantage as it is comfortable to hold the camera in one hand (plus wrist strap). The battery compartment lid requires careful handling as in common with the A460 has a rather delicate sprung hinge. A simple and more robust sliding compartment would have worked just as well and be less likely to damaged in use.

Although the 3.4 x optical zoom is slightly less than that of the A460 (4 x) the digital zoom is useful for filling the frame to get 'impact' whilst taking a photo (as opposed to later on a PC). Using about 2 x digital zoom gives an acceptable image (thanks to the 7.1 MP sensor), however the 4 x digital zoom is fairly pointless as the pixels become unacceptably obvious.

All in all a good camera at a good price.

See the separate review of the dedicated case (DCC 450).
