Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions - detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information - then selects the one that offers the perfect settings from 18 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image. Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. With moving subjects Servo Auto Focus/Auto Exposure (AF/AE) is in continuous operation so they are always in focus and correctly exposed and you never have to miss a shot. For close ups the camera automatically switches to macro mode for sharp shots while Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit and dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.
In Easy Mode the camera automatically selects all the camera settings deactivating all buttons except those used for shooting - ideal for beginners or children.
Ultra sleek, ultra stylish
The PowerShot A3100 IS combines ease of use with a new slim design. Compact enough to fit in your pocket, it also features a smart stylish metal exterior - perfect for you take with you wherever you go.

Simply select the mode you want and let the camera take care of everything else, ensuring breathtaking, exhilarating pictures even when shooting conditions are tough.
There are also two new photo effect modes: Super Vivid, which adds vibrant colours to photos for a dramatic result; and Poster Effect, which gives a retro feel to photos by creating a poster-like effect.

detects and corrects camera shake.

More creative options - near or far
The 4x zoom allows for a wide range of framing options and lets you get up close and personal with faraway objects. Camera shake can be an issue with zoom lenses but Canon's market-leading Optical Image Stabilisation makes sure that you can capture steady shots throughout the zoom range.
Power efficient with quick recharge
The PowerShot A3100 IS runs off an intelligent rechargeable Li-Ion battery that will give you hours of shooting pleasure and is quick and easy to recharge.
Improved shots in tricky lighting situations
The PowerShot A3100 IS features a new low light mode for use in places such as museums, parties and candlelit restaurants where you can't, or don't want to, use flash - automatically allowing you to capture atmospheric shots.

Meanwhile Canon's i-Contrast feature offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions. Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the gain in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without blowing out correctly exposed parts of the image, while the camera's noise reduction technology ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.
Video clips with easy YouTube uploader
As well as taking fantastic still pictures the PowerShot A3100 IS allows you to capture smooth 30fps VGA video clips. For fast and easy uploading of your clips to sharing websites like YouTube, Easy Web Upload software is included free in the box. This displays your SD clips and can store your YouTube log in details, so you can just select your clip and upload with one click.
With Eye-Fi cards you can upload direct
to the web without the need for a PC.

SDXC and Eye-Fi card support
The PowerShot A3100 IS supports SDXC memory cards as well as Eye-Fi cards. SDXC cards are for high capacity storage of up to 2TB (2 Terabytes = 2,000 Gigabytes) while Eye-Fi are the first memory cards with their own Wi-Fi transmitter that allow you to effortlessly transfer pictures or videos directly from the camera to online sharing sites via the Eye-Fi server without the need for a PC. You can also send movies wirelessly to your own PC and customize not just where your pictures and movies are sent but also how you want them organised.
Shoot with confidence
Easy Hints & Tips provides onscreen guidance so even beginners can operate the camera with confidence right from the box. Menu explanations are always easy to understand and when settings are changed, the relevant icon displays in an easy-to-see orange colour adding up to a sophisticated and pleasant operating experience.
New filing options
Organising your photos is now even easier thanks to the PowerShot A3100 IS's new filing options. Auto Category sorts images into categories depending on each shooting condition; while My Category allows you to tag images to different categories using your own criteria E.g. people, scenery, Events.
A world of advantages with Canon technology
Rich razor-sharp images - every time
The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon to the most exacting standards - lenses based on over 60 years of experience for outstanding results.
The outstanding quality of Canon lenses is underscored by their use in most broadcast applications. For example programs like Coronation Street, Casualty and X Factor and nature documentaries like The Blue Planet and Life, as well as the majority of outside broadcasts in the UK, are all recorded using Canon's state-of-the-art broadcast lenses.
An advanced Optical Image Stabilizer keeps moving subjects in sharp focus. Meanwhile framing, reviewing and sharing shots is made easy with a bright 2.7" LCD screen, which incorporates a Night Display mode to aid visibility in low light and a selectable Grid Line display to help you compose the perfect shot. A resolution of 12.1 Megapixels allows you to capture every scene in rich detail, ensuring oversize prints - even of cropped pictures - retain high image quality.
Face Detection Technology locates faces in a shot
and automatically adjusts for natural skin tones.

Fast, intelligent processing and superb image quality
Canon's most advanced image processor, DIGIC III, lies at the heart of every Canon digital camera and delivers exceptional processing speeds, responsive operation and advanced noise reduction. It also makes possible intelligent Face and Motion Detection technologies, which find and track moving subjects until you're ready to shoot, adjusting the camera settings for optimal results. Advanced Noise Reduction ensures richly detailed clean images even at high ISO speeds.
With Face Detection up to 35 faces can be detected in each shot and focus, exposure, flash setting and white balance are all automatically adjusted for optimal results with natural-looking skin tones. Face Select & Track allows a single face in a crowd to e selected and tracked alas the main subject while a Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot has been set up, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame when the shutter is depressed and the self timer started - it then waits for an extra face to get in the frame and adjusts focus and exposure before it takes the picture.
Motion Detection Technology uses changes in scene information and scene brightness to accurately identify subject motion. The optimal ISO level is then set automatically to minimise blur and maximise image quality.
Automatic Red-eye Correction is available in both shooting and playback mode and accurately removes the red-eye effect caused by flash.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 May 2013As an avid amateur photographer I found this camera to be great value for money. Very easy to use, the various settings have captions and instructions to follow. The camera basically gives you advice while taking your photos. Picture quality is quite high for the price, and holds well when printing in the larger sizes e.g 8"x10". Excellent battery life too!
I would definitely recommend this camera.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 May 2011I have been using Canon Powershot cameras for many years now and on the whole I have been very satisfied. However I do think that a number of changes have not been for the better. On the plus side:
- Great pictures generally
- Surprisingly good sometimes in low light conditions
- Lots of creative options.
On the down side:
- No optical viewfinder
- Smaller not always better (more solid older version gave much greater stablility) I don't need my camera to be that small.
- Non-standard Canon battery - with my previous Powershots I had rechargeable AA batteries and in an emergency there was never an ocasion when I was not able to find spares. While the battery life of the canon battery seems good - if I am not expecting to use the camera, the battery does not get charged and on probably 1/3 of occasions I have used it, the battery has run out on me, which with no option for spares (unless I splash out on a canon spares)is very frustrating.
- General critisism of many cameras - flash defaults to on. In vast majority of situations I want flash off and I am happy to switch it on when I need it.
So a good camera but in some aspects a step back from previous versions.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 June 2011Not only does this camera look great it is great. Pictures are of the highest quality. Battery lasts forever. East to transfer pics. Lots of little gadgets to help you play with your images if you are the more experienced camera person. Best of all is it has a sort of "idiot mode" where you can set the camera to do all the work. Great pressie for the wife then boys! Only kidding girls but believe me if you want a camera that takes great pics but caters to all skill levels then this is it
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 March 2011I'm a novice photographer, so was looking for a camera that was easy to use.
Having read many of the reviews, I chose the Canon Powershot A3100. After charging the battery, within minutes I was able to take pictures and knew which buttons to press (not an easy feat for someone like me!).
Quality of pictures very good. I'm looking forward to taking many more!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 November 2010Not as good as I expected. It has replaced a Canon IXUS 65 and I have to say that the build quality does not feel as good and the image qulaity on the LCD screen and when viewed on the computer is not as good as the IXUS. I am disappointed but can live with it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2011This was a present which I gave to the recipient yesterday, a while after I recieved it. OK So I live I Spain and it was delivered within good time. However -it had NO CARD READER. What is the point of buying a digital camera if you have to purchase the card separatly and at extra cost. It came with batteries, and charger so why no card? NOT impressed at all.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 December 2010I got the camera today
and I was so dissapointed with the quality of the image in the screen. I have had other digital cameras before and I never faced anything like this. The image shown in the screen look all with pixels :S I really dont like that since I cannot see very well how will my shot will end up when I take it, because all I can see in the screen is a bad image. The image in the screen is not clear, it has points jumping all around which is very annoying for me.
Then I tried to take some pictures to see the quality and I most say that so far the ones taken without flash are so bad. It look like if I had taken them with a cellphone. And the acceptable ones are only with flash.
I decided to purchase this camera because it had good reviews and it was said that it took good quality pictures, but what I have just experience is totally the oposite.
I would like to know if everybody else is experiencing the same with this camera? or if it is just a problem with my camera?
And I want to ask you as well if you know if this camera is able to take good pictures at night or in places where there is not much light??
It would be really nice if you could give me your opinions or else I will return the camera.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2010It did what it said on the box, I was fed up with lugging around a hefty slr and decided to go for the small comapact camera, it takes amazing shots and is dead easy to use, you only need to know how to put the sd card and battery in and your done... I carry this camera everywhere i go, its small and handy pocket size i love it...
