- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 August 2007As the saying goes "The greatest camera is the camera you have with you at all times" so earlier this year I bought a Canon IXUS camera to carry with me. However, when her indoors saw it she commandeered it for her handbag. So I decided to buy the A640 while Canon was running their money back offer of £60.00. (Has anyone else noticed how camera and lens prices suddenly increase during a promotion and then quickly reduces again once the promotion comes to an end?)
This is a much larger camera than the IXUS and I sometimes have difficulty putting it into and getting it out of my coat pocket. However, where the A640 wins over the IXUS is by giving me complete manual control whenever I want it. It's surprising just how big an improvement you can see in your images when you use manual mode instead of the full AUTO or Program modes. Try experimenting and you'll soon see what I'm getting at.
A great facility, although being of low resolution, is the rear flip out LCD screen just like those found on good quality camcorders. This allows me to compose a low level shot and use my thumb to trigger the shutter or an overhead shot at arms length which certainly can help to reduce both backache and neck pain and is only a good thing when you reach my age LOL.
The main circular control dial on the top surface is where you select the shooting mode you want, be it Manual, Aperture or Shutter Priority, Program, Full Auto or one of the many Scenic modes available. Also on this dial is the Movie mode should you wish to video something. You access the main menu by pressing the Function button found at the rear panel and here you can set the ISO speed, White Balance, Drive mode (single/multi shot, shutter timer of 2 or 10 seconds delay. My colors set up (note the American spelling), Flash output, Metering mode and Image size & Quality is also found in these menus.
The one thing that is missing from this camera is a Hot-shoe so that an external flashgun could be used on it but I suppose the built-in flash will do a good enough job for most instances.
All in all an excellent camera which produces excellent images.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 November 2006I have used a Nikon Coolpix 990 for my work for the last 7 years but wanted something a little smaller/lighter. I chose the A640 as a replacement because it is smaller/lighter than the 990 but still uses AA batteries making it easy to get replacements in an emergency. It also has a flip-out LCD screen which allows me to get the camera into all sorts of angles - just like the 990 with its twist screen. I think I would have picked a Nikon again if the current alternative to the 990 had better shot-to-shot delay when using a flash - but it doesn't.
Good points. Smaller and lighter than the 990. Very quick to start up. The A640 has a mini-USB link so that getting pictures off the camera is easy. The manual setting is easy to use and is probably the best feature of the camera allowing you to get the best out of it. The flip-out LCD screen makes it easy to get the camera into all sorts of awkward angles. There is little if any shutter lag. Shot-to-shot delay is minimal even using the flash. Battery life is excellent even using the flash and the LCD continuously. ISO down to 800 means that taking pictures in low-light with or without the flash is a doddle.
Bad points. The images are a little more red/yellow compared with the Nikon. Getting the settings right to take pictures in Auto or Manual is more fiddly compared with the 990. Bottom line is that image quality is similar to the Nikon 990 but you have to work much harder to get that quality with the A640. Therefore, probably not much good as a camera to take holiday snaps but a good compromise for me to replace the 990.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2008This is the second Canon camera I have had. The older model was superb. I got this one in Summer 2007 to replace an older model which I had dropped and broken. Without hesitation I went to buy the A640. What a disaster.
The redeye doesn't work. Seems to be a problem identified by others when I researched on the web. Tried phoning customer service absolutely useless. If you're going to use flash don't buy this camera.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 November 2007Good all round Camera. Used it in cold cold January this year and the weather didn't affect the picture quality. Went on holiday in August to humid, hot Bangladesh and was concerned about whether the camera would be able to survive the enviroment. Worked like a treat. Pick up and shoot. I've had the camera for about 9 months now and in that time, it has been dropped twice from a meter and a half high (once on concrete). Still fully functional, no broken bits just minor scratches. Great sturdy build quality. Anyone looking to buy this camera, I'd advise you to buy a case with it as it doesn't come with one. It's a gorgeous, user freindly machine and I take it with me everywhere. Carry it in my jacket pocket and rucksack, hence it has begun to get a few scratches on the outer shell.
It uses 4 AA batteries and I'd advise you get a good rechargable battery pack with adapter. Something with 2700mha or higher battery. I find that normal cheap batteries work fine but always fear the low battery indicator coming up when I least want it. Also bought a 2GB SD Memory card from Amazon for about £6 and I am still snapping away without having to delete any old pictures.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 November 2012Finally broke this year!
Great camera, brilliant shots, easy to use, nice to handle and lots of great features. Would recommend
