I use my printer mainly for photographs and this printer really delivers even with compatible inks. The print quality is superb and although I find its default energy save mode, and the delay while it gets out of sleep mode, a bit annoying once up and running printing is quick and very quiet. Duplex printing on both sides of the paper works very well although the instructions and finding things in the software menu system takes practice; using Ilford photo paper and icm profile it was clearer following Ilfords instructions rather than Canons (I don't think Canon want you using any other than Canon supplies).
If you want a quality printer and not a "Jack of all trades" PSC machine then this is the one to go for.
Canon PIXMA iP4950 Colour Printer 9600 x 2400 dpi (12.5 ipm Mono and 9.3 ipm Colour)
this printer actually came with compatibles as opposed to canon cartridges. the print results are excellent and the replacement prices less than canon. as the printer vendor supplied these cartridges i assume using their compatibles in the future will be trouble free and not too expensive. certainly print quality is good.
The old unit started to make horrible noise, as if somtehing were broken inside.
The maintenance shop told me that spare parts for that model were no longer available.
The new printer looks identical to the old one and, best of all, has all the same features and functions.
I have a small business in music CD publishing, and the iP4950 does all wahat I need:
it prints directly onto CD surface, makes beautiful paper inserts onto glossy photo paper and has a wide range of adjustment options.
Also, one can make personal print parameter presets and name them at will.
Best of all, the new unit (as well as the old one) has double A4 paper trays: I can have thick/glossy and thin/normal paper availble for printing at all times. Here is where the customized printing presets come handy.
I expect the new printer to last at least as long as the old one (five plus years).
I could not be happier with my purchase!
Yes it was expensive, but worth it.
I am a keen photographer (I was once a professional) and wanted a printer which would produce quality prints. We searched around--willing to spend at least £400 if necessary to find something which would meet our demands.
Nowhere could we find a top loading printer which would take card. Most seem to load from a bottom tray meaning anything thicker than a couple of sheets of paper and lights start to flash.
By chance I came across a Canon iP4950 in an electrics store which was going into administration. I bought one purely for the print spec (and the bargain price) and was astounded. Once my wife saw it's top loading facility we printed on her heaviest quality card and she had to have one, hence the latest purchase.
Yes, you can buy printers which will do everything from sending faxes to brewing tea, the Canon iP4950 does none of that. It prints. It's a printer and nothing more but unless you do go in for the top priced machines you will not get better quality as Canon printers have the same spec throughout their under £400 range. Happy bunny ? I'm delighted.
Apart from taking Panoramic paper the paper handling via the rear top tray is extensive.
The only negative is the way it consumes ink - I'm sure it was designed to waste ink as it is always 'clacking & whirring' away to itself, sometimes for 5 minutes at a time. No doubt Canon calls this very important self-cleaning!
As soon as the Canon inks run out I shall revert to very much cheaper inks from MoreInks, which give as good a result as I need.
If this iP4950 fails then I don't know what I'll do, I don't have the space (or wallet) for an A2 printer.
Lastly, I have to say that I paid well over the odds for this printer at £139 but I'm pleased to see that it's now over £150!
