Avicenna's real name was Abu Ali al-Husayin ibn Abd Allah ibn Sina. He born in 980 AD in the Persian town of Bukhara (now in Uzbekistan, in the former Soviet Unition). He memorised the Koran by the age of 10. By 21, he became physician in-chief at the hospital of Baghdad. He then became personal physician to many Kaliphs. He wrote the “Kitab ash-shifa” (the Book of Healing) and the above “Canon of Medicine”, which summarised medical knowledge from the Greeks, Romans and Arabs before him and where he added his own new materia medica. These books were translated into Latin in the 12th century and he became a very important influence on European medical thought for many centuries. Ibn Sina’s importance to aromatherapy is even more significant, as he did not limit himself to describing hundreds of plants and their uses, and set down such accurate instructions on giving massage that they could be used today as a teaching manual (Davies, Patricia "Aromatherapy from A-Z"), but he invented the modern tecnique of distilling essential oils from flowers. As well as using massage, plants and plant oils, he worked out various methods of manipulating bones, such as traction for broken limbs and most interestingly, he introduced the all-fruit diet as a cleansing process, using fruits such as melons and grapes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Doctor (Eastern or Western) Should Read It 16 Mar. 2014

In fact, everyone should read this book for health and well being. This 2-book series — including Volume 1 is a monumental masterpiece of great scientific and philosophical value. You will be awakened from the dream of the inefficiency of conventional medicine with enhanced understanding of other methods of healing. It is amazing to realize that so much knowledge was available a thousand years ago and yet we are hardly doing much better today. Read this series — both volumes 1 and 2 and be healthy, and stay healthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gruner's remarks worth the price of the book. 30 April 2006
By Perry Scott Roberts - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
It is hard to believe that a book, so beautifully bound, is so poorly edited for numerous common typos.

That being said, the remarks of O. Cameron Gruner are wonderfully astute as to the history and meaning behind Avincenna's Canon. He compares traditional medicines with modern medicine and its lack of philosophy with a deftness only found in yoga sutras.

In addition, the Notes section of about 150 pages adds considerable understanding to the text of Avicenna. Notes helps the reader to experience the historical context of the Canon as well as its importance in modern medicine and philosophy.

I bought this book in order to understand alternative medicines regarding my own health and well being. I received that and much more.
