Capture the key moments in life - superb quality movies with ease
Compact, lightweight and easy to use the LEGRIA HF R506 gets you closer in Full HD with a big 57x zoom while optical Intelligent IS keeps movies steady. Ideal for capturing family memories.
Combat camera shake in every shooting environment
Intelligent IS the perfect solution to camera shake. It automatically detects the scene and selects exactly the right optical image stabiliser settings from 4 modes to counteract movement and prevent blur. Dynamic mode corrects roll and tilt movements that can occur when walking, ensuring sharp, steady videos.
57x zoom; Full HD CMOS
The genuine Canon HD video lens features a versatile 57x Zoom that lets you capture all the detail in even far away subjects. The 3.28 megapixel Full HD CMOS sensor delivers superb image quality and excellent colour reproduction even in low light.
Easily capture the first steps, first words - and a host of other magical memories - of up to three children as they grow with Baby Mode. Register each child's date of birth in-camera, and add colourful stamps and animations to record height and weight. All footage is automatically saved to the relevant baby album.
Superb quality recording
Bring out the best of Full HD with progressive recording at the highest rates for AVCHD (28Mbps) and MP4 (35Mbps). The compact camcorder records progressively, therefore compared with 50i recording (found in previous models), diagonal noise is eliminated and high image quality is maintained.
The powerful DIGIC DV4 imaging processor ensures higher image quality in low light and a substantial reduction in image distortion as it works together with the optical image stabiliser.
Audio Scene Select
Make your movies sound as good as they look with Audio Scene Select. Select from 5 scene modes and audio settings are optimised automatically to match the scene you're shooting. So whether you're filming speech at a wedding or music at a concert, you can enjoy immersive, realistic audio.
Enjoy simple, intuitive fingertip control of shooting and playback functions with a high-resolution 7.5cm (3.0") capacitive Touch-screen LCD. Opening the LCD panel quick starts the camcorder, so you'll never miss a shot.
Cinema-Look filters; Touch Decoration
Get creative with Cinema-Look Filters - select from 7 adjustable colour-grading filters to capture the perfect movie scene - or add fun effects to your movies without a PC using Touch Decoration.

The picture is sharp and crisp, it is surprisingly light (when the battery is not attached) and offers the option to be mounted on two different sized tripods (EDIT: The second hole is in fact a hole for locking the camera on place on the supporting tripod, the tripod that mounts this camera is in fact a standard 1/4" threaded hole, apologies). The zoom function is good, I can use it to read the spine of a CD cover 5 metres away without blurring (although it does require a specific level of zoom, full zoom may still blur). It does NOT come with any form of on-board memory, and while reasonably expensive the SanDisk SDSDU-064G-FFP memory card offers 64GB of memory which the camera tells me is enough for over 8 hours recording time.
The camera's microphone is again criticised. It does not come with the functionality to mount a separate microphone and outdoors the on-board microphone may suffer poor sound quality but in-doors it is good, although works best directionally.
The camera comes packaged with a micro-USB to USB cable, a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable to use with a PC and TV respectively, and an input for headphones to listen to playback. To watch back videos and use menu options you have to use the side screen, which must also be open when you record. It's touchscreen but very responsive and very user-friendly.Read more ›
First of all, the camera feels very comfortable in my hand. The Sony feels very light, cheap and plasticky but this camera feels a bit heavier. Not too heavy, just reassuringly so. It is also quite nice to look at (if that sort of thing bothers you). The hand strap is adjustable so you can make it fit perfectly for your hand. My main issue with the feel of the camera is the zoom button on the top. It's a very flat button so it is easy for your finger to slide over the top of it when zooming and it's also a bit stiff to push compared to the Sony camcorder. On top of that, the zoom slows down as it reaches maximum zoom and this, coupled with the button, make zooming a bit of an effort to get right. The one really good thing about the zoom is how quiet it is. The Sony's zoom is unacceptably loud but on this camera it's barely noticeable. It is possible to adjust the speed in the menu but apart from the variable setting (which is the default), the three other speeds are all very slow.
The quality of the recording itself is excellent, even the lowest quality setting is still very good.Read more ›
Out of the box I was able to point and shoot within minutes. Intuitive menu, and it felt quite solid and well made in the hand. Not at all cheap looking. I had suggested to my wife some shooting subjects but she declined. (Her loss.) So I filmed an array of things: Cycling, birds, dogs, kids, and even landscape.
It has a 57x "Advanced Zoom" and so I set about testing it out in the local park. It captured the detail in the trees on the opposite side of the park (a good 1/3-1/2 mile away). The blurb states it has a 3.28 megapixel HD CMOS sensor. I found it quite responsive in low light (although better in daylight) and the colour reproduction was superb. Really superb.
On my HD TV the image quality was almost comparable with some DVDs I'd been watching. I'd imagine with an editing suite set up you'd be able to produce semi-professional films. It was far superior to my iPhone and Fuji camera.
This was better than I'd anticipated. It had a feature that you could select the type of audio. Apart from in wind, the results were clear.
It allow up to three children's details to be input and can be saved in that child's baby album. I'm not sure this is all that handy. I remember our second camcorder (a huge looking Panasonic) had this feature. Most times we'd be recording both children. Or recording one and then zipping to another. It's quite a nice feature though. For example, birthdays. It'll say, so and so aged 3.
It has an image stabilisation that prevented some blur when I was filming whilst cycling.Read more ›
