Product Description

Record and share your professional quality videos with the Wi-Fi enabled LEGRIA HF M52 with an inbuilt HD CMOS PRO sensor. Wi-Fi connectivity means that you can now wirelessly transfer your MP4 movies directly from your camcorder to your Apple® iPhone®/iPad® as well as upload them to social networking sites, all with the click of a button.

Wireless connectivity

The LEGRIA HF M52 has inbuilt Wi-Fi connectivity which gives you the freedom to share your movies faster and with more people than ever before. You can now record your movies in MP4 format which is perfect for transferring files quickly from your camcorder due to its high image quality, high compression and low recording rate.

Astonishing High Definition

At the heart of the LEGRIA HF M52 is an HD CMOS PRO sensor taken from the professional Canon XF-series of camcorders. This sensor gives previously unseen levels of detail even in tricky lighting conditions like high contrast scenes, for example, a white wedding dress against a groom’s black suit or an ornate archway shrouded in shadow cast from the sunshine.

Thanks to the larger light-gathering area of the pixels, the HD CMOS PRO sensor enables you to shoot in low light conditions by coupling high sensitivity technologies with a wide dynamic range ensuring dark scenes are captured in bright detail with minimal noise.

The HD CMOS PRO sensor has been optimised to capture video at Full HD (1920x1080) resolution, offering a significant advantage over more conventional high-resolution CMOS sensors which have to resize their footage to digitally create a Full HD movie. Digital processing can compromise on quality but with the Canon HD CMOS PRO sensor the recording is captured in native HD resolution, ensuring uncompromised quality when replaying your movies on your High Definition TV.

Powered Optical Image Stabilizer
The Optical Image Stabilizer ensures shake-free movies every time.

Superb optical zoom and Optical Intelligent IS

The 10x optical zoom ensures you can get up close and personal, even with faraway subjects, for example at weddings or sporting events. Plus, an advanced iris diaphragm creates a more attractive and professional looking background blur.

Canon’s enhanced Optical Image Stabilizer technology with Intelligent IS, enables the camcorder to automatically switch between four image stabilisation modes to ensure your movies will always have a smooth, professional look. It automatically detects whether you need to stabilise heavy hand-shake, for example, when on the move (Dynamic), when filming at maximum telephoto range (Powered), when filming up close to correct angular and shift shake (Macro) or when you’re using a tripod to turn off the Optical Image Stabilizer to prevent blur (Tripod).

The combination of Canon’s Intelligent IS and Smart Auto means that the LEGRIA HF M52 automatically detects the scene and the best image stabilisation mode for optimum results, whatever the situation.

Large Dual Flash Memory to shoot and share

The LEGRIA HF M52 has large dual memory capability. It incorporates an internal memory of 32GB which can record and save up to 12 hours of HD movies. There is also a removable SDXC memory card slot so you can combine both internal and external memory. For instance, using an additional 64GB SDXC card will increase the available memory to a huge 96GB - that's around 36 hours of recording time. Meanwhile, Relay Recording means there is no need to stop filming when one memory becomes full as the camcorder automatically switches to the next available storage.

High resolution touch-screen
The high resolution touchscreen display makes viewing and changing settings easy.

Touchscreen control

The LEGRIA HF M52 combines a high resolution, high contrast 7.5 cm (3.0”) LCD full flat touchscreen display with an improved, intuitive user interface making it quicker and easier to find and adjust all of the functions and settings when shooting and viewing images.

Each of the camcorder’s key features has an accompanying icon with supporting guidance notes to ease you through the navigation. As a result, when filming you are just a touch away from sliding control options that allow for the easy and precise adjustment of settings such as aperture, shutter speed, focus, exposure and audio levels. Plus, thanks to Touch Focus, a single touch to a face or object on the screen will set the focus, while Touch and Track will ensure the focus remains locked on to the selected face/object even if it moves - the exposure will also compensate automatically.

Effortless movie-making with guidance from Story Creator

The improved Story Creator function provides guidance and direction for making well composed movies by providing a list of scene suggestions linked to one of five preset themes. Before you start shooting your movie the Story Creator function offers you the choice of five topics to select from (travel, kids and pets, party, ceremony and blog) and then advises you on the order in which to capture the shots and even recommends a length of time for each scene. In addition, a new on-screen guide button provides additional information to assist with subject composition and recommended duration as and when you need it.

After filming, Story Creator then enables you to categorise your videos by theme, rate each scene and even mix in music by connecting an external music player or using pre-installed music tracks, all from within the camcorder itself so there’s no need for a PC. Then, once you’re happy with your final movie, you can play it back on an HD television or other HDMI-compatible device via the integrated mini HDMI socket.

Cinema-Look Filters
Cinema-Look Filters change the very look and feel of your movies.

Change standard scenes into cinematic creations

The LEGRIA HF M52 features a number of Cinema-Look Filters which have been designed by professional film-makers. These allow you to transform everyday scenes into professional-looking footage by applying a range of filters including Vivid that accentuates primary colours for a bright, cheery look, Nostalgic that helps recreate the look of an old ‘70s TV programme, Sepia to add a sepia tint for an antique look, Dream that applies a soft focus adding a magical look for a dream-like sequence and Memory to give a light fall-off at the edges of the clip which adds a faded, misty look to create flashback scenes.

Each of the seven filters comes with an explanation on the screen before it is activated to ensure you select the right filter for the type of scene you are looking to record.

Touch Decoration

To enhance your movie personalisation experience Canon provides you with Touch Decoration. This exciting feature helps you to easily add effects to your movies in-camera using the touchscreen display without the need for a PC. It allows you to add in animations (like shooting stars), write over your videos with a stylus pen (e.g. Happy Birthday!) and even interweave still images into your final film.

Video Snapshot

Video Snapshot mode is a fun and easy way to shoot short scenes and combine them without the need for a PC. Simply press the record button to capture 2, 4 or 8-second clips, either during filming or playback and then select a series of clips to create a 'playlist' in one file for a simple, professional-looking, multi-shot movie.

With this camcorder you can mix both the original audio track and additional music during playback as well as rate your favourite scenes for playback giving you even more creative options.

Smart Auto mode

38 Smart Auto scenes help you capture the perfect image

To ensure top quality, true-to-life video in any lighting conditions, the LEGRIA HF M52 boasts Canon's Smart Auto technology that was pioneered in their digital still cameras. Smart Auto’s scene detection technology optimises settings according to the situation - detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information - then selects the perfect settings from 38 specially defined scenes.

Face Detection Technology

Canon’s sophisticated Face Detection Technology can simultaneously detect the faces of up to 35 individuals in a single frame and optimise the shooting settings for each. One face can then be selected as the main reference point and Face Select and Track will ensure that the camcorder remains locked on to the selected face for as long as possible, even if the subject moves.

High speed, precision focusing

Unique to Canon HD camcorders, Instant AF (auto focus) uses two auto focus sensors to help you find the perfect focus with speed and accuracy. This is great for HD movies where errors in focusing can be more noticeable. The first sensor quickly estimates the distance to the subject, while the second makes fine adjustments for absolute precision. It's effective even when shooting at night or with slow shutter speeds and it works so fast (refocusing takes place in about 0.5 seconds) that you may not even notice it's there.

Store directly to an external hard drive

The LEGRIA HF M52 connects directly to an external hard drive via a USB adaptor (UA-100) making it quicker and simpler to back up your movies. When you connect your external hard drive to your camcorder the menu will launch automatically and you then simply select the memory source you wish to save from and transfer the data, all without the need for a PC.

I was looking for a small camcorder for an upcoming tour of the Far East. I mostly take still photographs with our Nikon DSLR cameras which have video capabilities. Using DSLRs for video is not too easy to produce good results, although the image quality is excellent. So I wanted a camcorder that could be carried around in addition to a Nikon DSLR, if it was too heavy or large I know from experience, it would never get carried, so there would be no point buying it.

What I wanted first of all was high image quality, but in the smallest, lightest packae possible. I didn't need extensive manual control, as unlike my DSLRs, it would be left on some form of Automatic programme.

I initially bought the slightly larger and more expensive Panasonic X900 which is possibly higher quality both for video and still capture, but it was quite heavy. The colours were also unacceptibly 'washed-out' no matter how the colour controls were tweaked, a decent picture couldn't be recorded. This could've been a faulty unit, but other reviewers report the same issues. Amazon were excellent with their Returns system.

The Canon doesn't have the very highest 1080p setting of the X900, but the AVCHD on the M52 does produce superb image quality with beautiful rich colours. The M52 doesn't have an EVF so where looking through a viewfinder is essential the M52 wouldn't do. The screen is very bright and in all but the brightest sunlight is fine. The M52 also has 32Gb of internal flash memory and a SDHC card slot which I install 32Gb SD cards. This gives about 8 hours recording on the highest quality AVCHD setting. It takes some time to record 8 hours of video in short clips.

I have largely stuck with Canon kit for my video & imaging needs. I must admit though the high def video arena is populated with some stunning tech in 2012 - specifically Canon has serious competition at all market levels from Sony and Panasonic.

Did I consider pushing the funds for a Sony CX730 or Panasonic X900? Well ... umm ... yes if I'm honest. However in the end I stuck with Canon and here is why ...

Firstly (and at the slight risk of incurring a plethora of eyeball rolling) I actually get a warm fuzzy feeling from Canon kit. The company have an obvious pedigree in the imaging arena, but the rudiments of their products that have kept me fairly loyal. The M52 is no exception, Canon designed the unit for users looking for pro quality video (CMOS Pro Sensor) & famed Canon video lens. The audio capture is flawless, images are stunning and the Canon eco system of accessories is drool worthy.

Handling. Well I'm upgrading from Canon's stupidly brilliant MV5iMC, which has served me as the Porche of video cameras. Yes, better on-paper consumer tech has came along in 9 years but the little MV5 has captured the most personal events in my life (wedding, family et al) with bleeding level attention to detail and never let me down. To this day still attracts 'wow, whats THAT' comments. Unbelievable, only the world of 1080 has led me to seek an upgrade.

The M52 has nestled in my grip with similar comfort, if you do nothing other than charge and shoot on auto this little machine is sheer joy. There is however more, so much more ...

I took my new toy on a test drive in Lanzarote this month.

Considering the price of this, and considering that it is designed for the consumer market rather than semi-professional, I must say that this camera has some outstanding features. It has superb colour and clarity, and performs extraordinary well in low light conditions. It has a surprising number of manual overides, again normally only found on high-end systems. These include manual shutter, manual apperature, manual sound level and manual white balance. These can all be set to automatic if you wish. It records in several different resolutions and qualities, ranging from AVCHD 1 to MP4 format. It has a 3mm sound input jack, allowing it take an external microphone. It also has an 3mm headphone connector, allowing you to monitor the sound level. It has a 43mm screw mount on the front, allowig you to attach filters/hoods, or if you wish, a 52mm adapter ring.

You can pretty much do anything you want with this camera, and price taken into account, this makes it a good choice for hobbyists looking for something approaching a semi-professional system.

I bought the Canon Legria HF M52 in order to take videos of our newborn son. I am an experienced non-professional photographer and all of my photographic equipment is high quality Canon. As such, as a Canon fanatic I didn't really check the competitive camera models offered by other brands (mainly Sony and Panasonic). I opted to go with this model than with the cheaper M56 (which has less built-in memory) because I found it in an extremely good offer in Amazon.

I have shot some videos until now and I am really pleased with the quality of the videos. This model really has a pro-standard processor and the end result is absolutely stunning, not only on a computer screen but also on a Full HD Sharp 40" TV. The lense is wide enough and the really bright (f1.8). I also need to comment that the quality of sound recording is really good.

The HF M52 is really light, very small and handy. As for the built quality... it is made from good quality plastic, but it is nowhere near the exceptional build quality and sturdyness of my EOS 7D. Nevertheless, also its price is nowhere near the price of EOS 7D and most of this kind of video cameras have this kind to built-quality.

I think that Canon HF M52 is not loaded with lots of goodies (i.e. 3D video shooting) like the Sonys or Panasonics. However, HF M52 has lots of digital filters to use while you are taking a video in order to make it more interesting, however most of these fiters can also be applied using a suitable computer program.

As a conclusion, HF M52 produces exceptional video quality, which is underlined by the Canon optics.
