Great results in any conditions
Your life happens everywhere, so the LEGRIA FS 406 includes Program Auto Exposure (AE) mode that gives you settings that automatically result in the best exposure settings for different conditions and different subjects. These modes include Portrait mode which ensures perfect close up shots of your friends and family. Sports mode captures the action with faster shutter speeds. Night Scene mode is designed to give you great shots after the sun goes down. Snow and Beach modes compensate for bright surroundings and give you the proper exposure of your subject.
Great low light performance
Some of the most magical shots are taken at the end of the day or long after the sun has set. You won't miss any of them thanks to the LEGRIA FS 406's built-in video light. The light lets you shoot subjects in low light up to 4.9 feet away, e.g. when filming a sleeping baby, so you can capture all of the low light moments you want to record.

Fun short movies made easy
Using Video Snapshot mode it is fun and easy to create great video montages. Simply press the record button to capture 2, 4 or 8-second clips. To make and playback a simple multi-shot movie is quick and easy and you don't need a PC. All you have to do is select a series of clips and create a 'playlist'. This can then be set to music, chosen from the preloaded, rights-free tracks on the camcorder or from a selection supplied on the accompanying CD. Alternatively, you can upload your own WAV format tracks using the Music Transfer Utility supplied.
Power efficient with quick recharge
The LEGRIA FS 406's intelligent battery lets you shoot for up to 3.5 hours on a single charge. Plus all it takes is 20 minutes to recharge for a further hour's recording.
Never miss a shot
In Pre REC mode, the camcorder starts recording three seconds before you even press the Record button. Three seconds of footage are continuously stored and automatically added to the beginning of your clip from whenever you start recording - you need never miss that crucial moment again. With Quick Start standby mode you can also power up the camcorder in less than a second by simply flipping open the LCD screen.
Over 70 years of lens excellence
Every Canon camcorder lens is constructed to the most exacting standards and backed by more than 70 years’ experience in crafting lenses for broadcast. Up to 13 individual lenses can be included in a single Canon camcorder lens, each featuring aspheric lens elements to remove any image distortion for the highest quality movies. Canon make their own lenses and their outstanding image quality is underscored by their use in most broadcast applications. For example, programmes like Coronation Street, Casualty and X Factor, nature documentaries like The Blue Planet and Life, as well as the majority of outside broadcasts in the UK, are all recorded using Canon's state-of-the-art broadcast lenses.

I will update on transferring and the DVD/Hard Disc quality when Ive monkeyed about and loaded the software.
The Casing and the build quality is top notch. Sleek and beautiful, with such a light and small machine, yet it feels so tactile to hold. The buttons are substantial yet nimble and the great thing about it is even the missus thinks it looks sexy.
As for simple operations, I am using a fast SD memory card so I works like a dream and if you are saving money not buying one with a solid state state drive I reckomend you buy the best quality you can afford, then skimp on the GB as you can buy more later and swap them quick as a flash (no pun intended).
It records constantly when you turn it on so it will add the first 3 seconds before you press record to any shot so you dont miss anything - this is perhaps the most exciting feature im waiting to try on our little one and will update how it works.
As for sound, it comes out perfectly pleasant, no harsh base tones from voices behind the camera, and it will pick up far away noises too, so this might make shooting in a croud annoying, I hope the software will be able to tone down background noise, but filming a quick blog, I could hear very clearly my wife in the other side of the house on the playback (although she is very noisy on the phone).
And as for Picture this is where I am so excited. In low lighting and shooting indoors at night I would have thought it would have a strange look like the similarly priced Sony and Panasonic's, yet it was crisp and clean with the minimum of fuss on the image and looked spectacular even on the little screen.
Anyway I shall update later so for now it gets 4*
The transfer software, although quirky on first attempts is soon learned and does the job well of transfering to computer. I have not used the software for manipulation as I have some old stuff I have used for years and is good enough for my use.
For family based stuff it is a good camera. Very light and easy to use. As with all cameras it needs a reasonable amount of light. In dim lighting the colour shifts a little. The small built in light is ok for close up work but it is only a few mm in diameter so cannot be expected to be good for full size work. I have put 4 x 36watt twisted type flourescent lamps into the light fitting of one room for video indoors and the results are superb. Better than expected.
For the price its a good camera, even for video courses delivered over the internet. Smart filmwork may need something a little more sophisticated.
Records to an SD card, (make sure you get the right one and type).
Downloads to computer Ok, but problems start when you try to join up several scenes using Videostudio ProX3 - the productions keep stopping momentarily and then re-starting. They play well when used in isolation. Am trying to overcome this but it's annoying and I think It has to do with recording to an SD card.
I have always been pleased with Canon products but not sure about this one, if I can overcome this 'glitch' it will be excellent.
This replaced a much better Canon MV630, stolen at St Pancras station.
