Canon makes one of the best point and shoot cameras. Over the years the IXUS range have been with me during my travels, nights out and family outings. It has a standard 2.5 inch LCD display, easy to use modes. There's hardly any blurred shots in auto mode. The colours are true to real life and it records excellent videos.

My goodness Canon know how to make cameras. The first thing you notice when you take the camera out of the box is the build quality. It is absolutely superb. It feels very solid, buttons and switches are clearly built to last and it sits so well in your hand.

I bought this camera for my wife and the requirements were:
Small enough to slip into a handbag/pocket, built-in viewfinder, good quality pictures, good indoor (flash) pictures, simple to use, nice to look at!

The Ixus 70 ticks all of these boxes and more. As one reviewer stated, this is the highest megapixel camera with a viewfinder and if you enjoy using the viewfinder to take pics, this is the only camera you should consider in this price range.

The picture quality is just stunning. We took a few shots of the recent storms and the level of detail the camera picks up is great. I don't particularly like using a flash and have taken most of our pictures without the flash enabled. The camera performs very well on this setting and can handle some quite poor lighting conditions admirably.

It doesn't do the camera justice to call it a "point and shoot" handbag camera but if this is what you are after, then save yourself the extra £££ for the udpated models and buy this one with a 2 GB memory card to go with it.

The menu system is very straightforward and the camera is incredibly quick. This includes start-up time when you switch on, and time taken to take pictures.

Connecting to the computer - we connect to our MacBook via USB and the Mac detects the camera automatically and downloads the pictures into iPhoto. Works like a dream!

You will not be disappointed with this camera for less than £150.

Only recommendations I would make are to buy a soft case and a 1 or 2 GB memory card. Make sure you spend a little more on your memory card than just going for the cheapest. Your pictures are worth the investment. Budget memory cards are more likely to become corrupt and result in the loss of your pics. I went for the SanDisk SD 1 GB EXTREME III.

I'm travelling Europe for 3/4 months and want to have plenty of photos to remember it by. I therefore spent a month researching as many cameras as possible to make sure I got the right one. This is the camera I decided upon and I'm glad I did.

Pros:
- The camera is small and sturdy, being made of metal. If you drop it you're more likely to damage the ground than the camera.
- The interface is easy to use; I was able to pick it up and use it without reading the manuals.
- There is a viewfinder. You can switch off the LCD screen and use the view finder to save power.
- Plenty of shooting modes including a great macro mode.
- The movies are great quality and the sound is crisp and clean.
- The camera is responsive and has a nice shutter speed to make up for the lack of anti-blur.
- The zoom feature is easy to use, and being optical the pictures don't end up grainy.

Cons:
- Lack of anti blur.
- Face detect doesn't work all the time, but it's not too big a deal.
- The included memory card is only 32mb so you'll need to buy a new one.

I'd like to note that I bought this camera without realising that the battery was li-ion. I was worried about how I might charge it in Europe but to my delight I discovered that the charger comes with a European plug as well. With the Amazon price being £80/90 cheaper than it is in the shops I think that you owe it to yourself to buy one.

I liked a previous version (55) of this so much, I bought two, one for work and one for home. Within its limitations, it is a superb piece of kit, and well suited to everything from snapshots to technical macros. There have been comments about the flimsy door to the mini USB connector, and the works one did finally fail, after several years of hard use. Both cameras have started emitting a small puff of smoke when the flash is used, so I suspect they are on the way out, although both still working fine. You do need a case, and the Canon one, although expensive, is the most compact choice, although there's no space for a spare battery or SD card. Biggest drawbacks are the limited zoom, lack of anti-shake (which makes zoom without a tripod a waste of time) and especially the lack of a battery state indicator. It just dies, and that's very frustrating. That said, I've got into the habit of charging the battery every time I download, and despite taking perhaps a hundred shots, the battery doesn't run flat, so life is good. I've had to replace the batteries (I bought a spare) when they finally refused to keep a charge. Both cameras have been robust, especially the work one which has a tougher time, and neither has needed repair, other than the broken cover. Supplied software was good, and the photo stitcher was useful for panoramic views without loss of resolution.

Needing a replacement for my Pentax s5i after the flash stopped working, I had a look at the review sites and, for the price, Canon's Ixus 70 seemed to provide the best results. I have only had it a couple of days, so I suppose I need to give it a proper workout yet, but so far I am impressed. I like the small size, although it seems weightier than the s5i. It has a good sized screen with excellent clarity. The function buttons are a little fiddly, being flush to the camera body with no bumps or ridges for low light handling. The mode switch seems a bit plasticky, hope it stands up to repeated use. There is an excellent range of shooting modes, with some nice features I have not used before, like colour swap and colour accents, so they'll be fun to have a go with. Anyway, seems like a good buy if, like me, you have little experience with a camera and just want a handy point and shoot for your hols. Amazon are charging the best price at the moment, I think (and it's now 50 pence cheaper than when I bought it!)
