I am only an amateur so I cannot advise on the technical side of the camera. For the more technical stuff you would want to look up a professional review. I have however quite a few cameras, some still working and some I have worn out.....a Canon 40d, Canon SX10 & 20, Nikon Coolpix, Pentax 90, APS Nikon, Fuji s7000, 3 fuji compacts and probably 6 35mm cameras. I enjoy taking photos and have worked my cameras to the limit. I wanted a camera to keep in my handbag because many times I have gone somewhere and missed a photo opportunity and carrying a bridge camera round I soon got shoulder ache as well as half my handbag taken up. I was looking on Amazon at cameras and was drawn to the Ixus 230 because it had a reasonable optical zoom range. I saw online a couple of photos taken with the ixus 230 and the photos looked good so brought it. I have had the camera now 2 weeks and so far so good, I am pleased with it and it has to be one of the best I have owned. It took me all of 5 minutes without looking at the manual to work out where the settings were, where the creative filters were and the camera has taken some impressive shots. I tested it on Firework night. I have never taken any half decent photos on firework night even on cameras with firework settings so was very sceptical I would get any good photo. I was surprised. The photos I took were excellent. I have not got a steady hand and did not use a tripod and putting the camera onto firework mode I was expecting a disaster especially as one shot was between 3 and 10 seconds. How it did it I do not know but each photo came out near perfect. I had people walking through the photo as it was being taken, car lights as cars drove past and shaky hands and you would never have known.Read more ›

I take many photographs and have had a few cameras over the years but am not a professional on cameras. However i am always careful and check reviews etc before buying and eventually decided (over two weeks) on the canon ixus 230 as I felt it met my requirements. I use it for personal use only but use it a lot outside hill walking etc as well as inside. i have not been disappointed. I chose the pink colour which is lovely and also bought a pink matching case from amazon which fits nicely. the camera is compact and can easily fit into a pocket and is easy and quick to start up. The camera is easy to understand and the buttons are all straight forward, easily accessible and self explanatory which i like. The zoom is quick and very clear as is the quality of all photgraphs which impressed me immediately. There is an automatic flash built in so no "pop up flash" required. There is a gps function but so far have not used this but might when out hillwalking or on holiday. The battery is charged on an external charger and so ordering an extra battery means you won't run out of charge. So far the only down side is no panoramic views unless i have just not found it yet!

So for anyone wanting a small quality camera with easy to follow features and excellent quality photographs while pocket sized and allows extra batteries so you don't run out of charge then i would highly recommend this camera. You won't be disappointed and is excellent value for money.

I've owned an Ixus 220 HS since it was launched in the UK; the lil' red beastie has been to various exotic places such as China and Germany, as well as dozens of gigs, festivals and events. Alas, it's now somewhat bruised and battered, so I was instantly interested in its successor, the Ixus 230 HS. Partly because it has an 8x zoom (rather than 5x), but also because it's available in purple ;)

As far as successors go though, there isn't much between the two cameras. The 230 HS is slightly bigger and some of the controls have been moved around (to accommodate the slightly larger LCD), but fundamentally, the differences between the two cameras can be summarised as follows:

The Ixus 220 HS has a 24mm lens (wide-angle) and a 5x optical zoom
The Ixus 230 HS has a 28mm lens (ultra-wide-angle) and an 8x optical zoom

This then begs the question: is the extra optical zoom a worthwhile trade-off for the loss of the ultra-wide-angle lens?

Well... for me, the answer is sadly "no". Having taken both cameras out over the weekend (two separate events; 800 photos in total), it soon became clear that the difference between 24mm and 28mm is nearly as dramatic as the difference between 28mm and 35mm: with the 220 HS, you can stand closer to your subjects, making it easier - and quicker - to compose your shot. While I initially started off with the 230 HS, by the end I found myself defaulting back to the 220 HS for most shots.

To be fair, my "use-case" is fairly unique: the events were held in relatively small, enclosed spaces and I was mostly "capturing the moment", rather than getting people to pose for the shot (for staged shots, I switched back to a bridge camera!).

Was unlucky to get a terrible example of this camera. First impressions good. Took great shots indoors, much brighter than my previous panasonic. Unfortunately outdoors there was terrible corner softness on wide angle and lots of chromatic aberation. Results were closer to a mobile phone than the panasonic. Was also very noisy on video when zooming. Reading some forums I found that they are built in two places. China and Japan. Very few people had problems with Japanese one but people with Chinese ones often had quality issues. I took it back to store I bought it from and got it exchanged for another. This time it was (luckily - I didn't check) made in Japan. Quality of the 2nd example is very good. No softness or chromatic aberation (there is some in high contrast scenes but its not that noticable) issues.
Pictures are now very good with nice colours and decent sharpness. Very easy camera to use and full auto seems to produce the best results overall but nice to have a few other scene modes and adjustable ISO/metering modes etc.
Video is good. Zooming is noisy on video but at least you can do it. Can't on all cameras.
The HS system on this camera is great for speed but also for low light quality. It really is a cut above other compacts here although we're not quite talking SLR quality. The flash will still be needed in very dark situations. Indoor daylight or indoor well lit room will be possible with no flash though. Overall I'm impressed with the 2nd example, so if you are disatisfied with this camera chances are you have a dud.
