There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
The major improvements can be summed up as follows - 24 mega pixel vs 18, quicker and vastly more sophisticated autofocus system, rear touch screen, faster sequential photos, built-in stabilisation system for video, included Wifi/Bluetooth (for file transfer, camera control etc), top LCD display.
A few 'negatives' - the battery life seems to be shorter, no 4K video.
Overall I am very pleased I made the upgrade and believe the money was well spent.
Really pleased that I purchased this camera only minus point so far is that the body feels rather 'plasticky' when compared to other EOS systems that I've used.
Probably add more reviews after a period of serious use.
This was an upgrade from a 40D and the difference is marked. The images are clear and striking. Control is good. The flip out screen with live view mode means taking candid shots and shots in strange angles really easy.
The only two letdowns for this are
1) the plastic body compared to prior metal bodies. This is a compromise you make when you buy this over say an 80D. If you're a semi-pro user and will be exposing your camera to more extreme conditions then you'll definitely want to invest in a more solid camera with better weather-proofing.
2) there is now Canon battery grip available for it. I've always bought the grips not so much for the battery life but for the increased girth and the vertical release. I am sad that there's not one available (there is a 3rd party one which I may try.)
If however you're an occasional user and want lots of features for not a lot of money, then as far as I'm concerned, this is a great little camera.
The camera menus are logical and easy to understand, usability with the articulating touchscreen is great, Autofocus points are well spread out in the viewfinder and Dual pixel AF is fantastic for video. I would suggest to get used to the viewfinder when taking pictures, it is a much better camera in viewfinder mode especially if you want to use fast shutter speeds. There are a lot of youtube videos around that will guide you through the setup, Tony Northrup's video is highly recommended.
This camera is also a very good stepping stone so you can accumulate some good EF L-series lenses that will later allow you to move up to a full frame camera. Canon has the biggest variety of lenses and the second hand market is a great place to find bargains on professional quality lenses. This is what will make the biggest impact on your pictures rather than the body.
The wifi functionality is great, I can connect it to an ipad or a computer and control the camera from there or view the pictures as well when they are taken. This means you can tether wirelessly your camera to your tablet or computer and see the pictures as they are taken! Great stuff.
I uploaded some pictures taken with the 18-135 IS USM lens in a typical zoo scenario so you can judge for yourself. They have not been processed in any way, these are straight out of the camera. In general this is a very good all round camera that will serve you well. Compared to the 80D, this has a newer processor, images are a bit brighter and so is video. I would still go with the 77D and maybe trade it in for the 90D when it comes out in the future depending on what features it will have.
