Product description
Product Description
The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens is a large-aperture lens specifically designed for EF-S type digital SLR cameras, and that offers a super wide angle to short telephoto zoom range, with built-in Image Stabilization. The focal length is equivalent to approx. 27-88mm in 35mm format.
This lens features Canon's latest optical Image Stabilizer technology, providing up to 3-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds. This ensures clear, crisp images, even in dim light.
Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors.
Note: Only Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II and 12 II fit on this lens.
Note! Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or digital camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size. Only fits on the EOS Digital Rebel series, or 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, and 7D SLR cameras.

Manufacturer's Description
Zoom lenses are very convenient. The equivalent of two or more fixed focal length lenses in one unit. The maximum aperture of some zoom lenses changes as you alter the focal length, but through-the-lens (TTL) metering takes this into account to give correct exposure.
To meet user demands for a fast EF-S zoom lens, Canon has specially designed a lens with a large aperture of f/2.8 for select Canon Digital SLR cameras. The large circular aperture produces a shallow depth-of-field, creating background blur that draws attention to the photographic subject.
The lens construction includes UD and aspherical elements, which deliver impressive image quality throughout the entire zoom range. Image Stabilizer lens groups shift to compensate for camera movement so that the image appears steady on the image plane, ensuring clear, crisp images, even in dim light.
With a Ring-type USM, inner focusing and innovative AF algorithms, this lens achieves autofocus quickly and quietly, and with full-time mechanical manual focusing, manually adjusting the focus is possible even in AF mode.

From the manufacturer
One of the joys of photography is using your camera to tell the stories of everyday life. There is beauty in the simplest of subjects – reflections in a shop window or someone you pass in the street. And once you start looking for these shots, you’ll see them everywhere.

Customer reviews
Top reviews from United Kingdom
There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Build quality is solid, it's quite a heavy lens and I've read about lens creep in other reviews - my copy doesn't creep at present, but I can feel how it wouldn't take much. Not really a problem for how I'm using it though. Overall it's far superior to the kit lens in build quality, image quality, and overall features (as it should be at the price point). I picked it up in a warehouse deal and so the value seems particularly good.
The only problem I had was when an internal ribbon cable cracked after several years of regular use - annoying, but to be expected after years of heavy use - necessitating a trip to the repair shop.
I would put the image quality almost on a par with the L series lenses, and it was a massive improvement on the kit lens - sharper, with much less chromatic aberration and far better focusing.
Update as of Oct 15- 2 and a half years after my initial purchase- still going strong with this lens as my main tool. I have others which do other jobs well, but this would still be the only lens I would use if I had to have just one. As it is not an L and does not have dust sealing, it has got quite a bit of dust in it (shine a torch through it) but in no way degrades the quality and is not visible. Unlike my 650d which I had to manually clean recently.
I'm probably not going to be able to use this for travel due to (1) weight and (2) size. That's not a criticism of the lens, just the reality of needing to travel light!
My experiences:
- Focus is very fast and silent. Ultrasonic is really the business.
- Extremely flexible focal length, excellent image quality. I took it to Canada, and it was excellent for the landscapes and portrait work I did. The only other lens i wish i had would have been a 70mm-400mm for some wildlife work.
- Indoors you'll need a flash, although i guess any brighter and DOF would be an issue.
- When on my 600D, it pulls the camera nose down. Its heavy compared with the kit lens.
- The lens extends in length when zooming, although I think only the super expensive lenses are fixed in physical length.
- The barrel maybe plastic, but is very study and the lens feels like a great bit of kit. Its lovely :)
I was concerned before purchase that I would miss the extra zoom of my previous 'walk about' 17-85 lens but in practice you can't notice the difference unless you do a back to back comparrison.
This is a great go-to lens and will rarely be of my camera from now on.
Appears well built as you would expect from Cnon at this price point, but I do agree with many reviewers that at these prices Canon should be supplying a lens hood, which is after all in the region of 4% of the cost of the lens, despite it not being an L series.
Too early to comment on the quality of results from this lens, but I have high hopes. May edit this review when results are in.
