From the manufacturer
It’s often said that a face can tell a thousand stories. And the real beauty of portrait photography is that every shot is as individual as the person in it. Capturing a face can be one of the most satisfying and rewarding types of photography. And, with a good lens and the right technique, it’s easy to get the results you want.
A versatile pancake lens delivering great image quality
This 40mm focal length enables you to tackle everything from portraits to landscape and street photography and delivers great image quality right across the frame thanks to an aspherical lens design and Super Spectra coatings.
Extremely portable lens ideal when space is at a premium
Never be without your EOS. The compact EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is very thin, so you’ll always be able to take your DSLR with you.
Useful low light shooting
A f/2.8-22 aperture range provides control over depth of field, giving you the freedom to restrict or extend focus as required. A fast maximum aperture allows hand-held shooting in low light without using flash.
Smooth and quiet AF, STM focusing for movies
Fast, accurate autofocusing ensures pin-sharp images even in tough conditions. Movie Servo AF with STM uses stepping-motor technology for smooth, quiet autofocus when filming.

The focus ring is a bit small and fiddly but I think that's to be expected when it comes pancake lenses so can't complain too much about it.
I think this is a really ideal focal length for a standard everyday prime on a full frame camera and with a pretty fast aperture for the tiny size. When taking into consideration the price, quality and size I really think this is a winner for me. If low light is a major factor then you'll probably want to go for something faster. At this price point the 50mm f/1.8 may suit your needs better if you need to make a decision between the two lenses.
When I tried it on a crop sensor however I'm going to be honest I found it something of an awkward focal length. Not wide enough but not tight enough maybe that's just down to years of being used to 35,50,85. The 1.6 crop factor effectively makes it a 60mm which felt a bit nomans land to me I didn't like it anywhere near as much as I did on full frame. I haven't marked the product down for that as it's user preference and in terms of image quality It's just as good.
I think if you are considering this as a first lens for your new crop sensor camera I think a better starting place would be the 24mm f/2.8 stm as a standard prime followed buy a 50mm f/1.8 for portraiture.
Great fun, great price, great images.
First of all, this is a tiny lens. It can easily fit in your pocket if you wanted to swap with your walk about lens whilst out and it makes using a 7D Mark II much easier given its minuscule weight.
The pictures it captures are just awesome. Of course, there is some vignetting wide open but nothing that cannot be fixed in Lightroom. Similarly, the sharpness improves from around f2.2 onwards but even wide open you get the most beautiful pictures thanks to the size of the aperture. I am always impressed with the quality of the bokeh which is much better than the f1.8 II thanks to the rounded 7 aperture blades (up from 5 in the previous version).
In terms of price:performance ratio, you probably cannot beat the 50mm STM with any other lens. As much as I enjoy shooting with L lenses, there is huge satisfaction in being able to get great images with something a lot of people would even consider disposable.
One thing to bear in mind is that at f1.8, your depth of field can become very small. You need to be quite precise about where you want to focus and ensuring that your subjects remain within the focus field to avoid shots looking like the camera missed focus.
Overall, if you want to get amazing pictures with lovely out of focus areas, you have to pick up this lens. And for less than £90, it is an absolute steal.
