From the manufacturer
Advanced optical design and exceptional image quality
A 14-element, 10-group lens design along with Canon’s Air Sphere Coating on the internal elements help minimise ghosting and flare.
A Fluorine coating on the surfaces of the front and rear elements help protect from dust and moisture.
Large, bright aperture for a focused performance in all light levels
A fast aperture of f/1.4 allows precise focusing even in low light.
The shallow depth-of-field afforded by such a wide aperture along with a 9-blade iris gives pleasing out of focus bokeh and greater creative scope.
The fast f/1.4 aperture allows more light into the lens and therefore gives maximum viewfinder brightness.
Smooth and precise 4-stop image stabilisation
The lens’ 4-stops of image stabilisation will help negate camera shake and give photographers or videographers working outside in difficult shooting conditions a distinct advantage.
The IS switch is conveniently located directly below the AF/Manual switch allowing image stabilisation to be activated even while holding the camera to the eye.
Responsive, high-speed and precise AF for exceptional focus agility
A ring-type USM motor in lens has been designed to react quickly and accurately, allowing near-silent focusing.
The focus mode switch is designed to prevent unintentional switching.
Manual focus is available full time for precise control, which is useful for filmmakers looking to achieve specific focus effects.
Durable construction and exceptional weather resistance
The lens features weather- and dustproofing in the mount, switches, and focusing ring.
A new mechanical structure ensures durability and vibration/shock resistance with the front section cushioned against accidental impact. The lens has been designed with durability and rigourous use in mind.

I bought this for portraiture, shooting at 3m, often f2 @ 160th. I found i got more keepers with my 135 f2 at a metre further back and a very similar aesthetic. I'd recommend the 135 F2 if you have space, or a 70-200 IS instead of this lens. I also have the 35 F1.4 mk2 which is stunning for accuracy and quality and much more versatile than I though it would be.
When it hit focus, in bright light, it was very impressive but was let down by focus inconsistency and the introduction of an odd circular blur that occurred on every other frame of a sequence I shot. I probably got a dud, others love this lens but I felt uneasy relying on it, so I returned it.
This lens is a worthy contender to the legendary 1.2. Whilst the 1.2 has its own special place, this lens with its 4 step IS, finally a useable AF speed and better sharpness makes it a winner.
The build quality is superb too. One nuance with this lens (in case you get worried) is that the IS activation and deactivation is quite loud, one of the loudest I have heard. Everyone I know with this lenses has the same, so it is not an issue!
