- L-series construction and optics
- Large f/1.2 aperture
- Fast, quiet USM auto focus
- Super Spectra Coatings
- Circular aperture for high background bokeh
- Provides distance information for the E-TTL II flash system
- Soft case and lens hood
The EF 50 mm f/1.2L USM incorporates Canon's high standards of precision optics. The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, combining high image performance and optimum operability with dust and moisture resistant construction.
Large f/1.2 Aperture
A large maximum aperture of f/1.2 provides high speed for shooting in low light conditions, without the need for flash. The large aperture also provides fine control over depth of field.
High Background Bokeh
A circular barrel aperture helps to create background bokeh, suitable for isolating subjects at large apertures and for compelling portrait photography.
Fast, Quiet Auto Focus
A Ring-type USM (Ultrasonic motor) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive rapid auto focus with near-silent operation. A high-speed CPU and improved AF algorithm contribute further to AF speed. The holding torque stops the focusing lens group without overshoot. Full time electronic manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF.
Super Spectra coatings
Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting - more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help achieve true colour balance and increase contrast for vivid hi-fidelity images.
Passes Distance Information to E-TTL II
The lens passes distance information back to the E-TTL II flash system of compatible EOS cameras to ensure optimal flash metering.
The EF 50 mm f/1.2L USM lens comes supplied with a cylindrical lens hood and a soft case.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens
From the manufacturer
It’s often said that a face can tell a thousand stories. And the real beauty of portrait photography is that every shot is as individual as the person in it. Capturing a face can be one of the most satisfying and rewarding types of photography. And, with a good lens and the right technique, it’s easy to get the results you want.
A professional 50mm lens with a very wide f/1.2 aperture
With its incredible f/1.2 maximum aperture, the super fast EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a consummate low-light performer. A lens that allows fine creative control over focusing and depth of field.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.

My intention was to use this lens in my wedding photography business to get those dreamy, creamy shots that everyone loves. However, after a weekend of testing the lens out on friends and family I determined that I could never use this lens on a paid shoot - it's simply not consistent enough in its autofocusing. At first I thought it was just me, but I spent several hours with my camera on a sturdy tripod pointed at various AF testing mechanisms and came to the conclusion that it was definitely the lens.
I gave this lens two stars rather than one because this lens would be great for anyone shooting in a studio or doing video. If you're going to be manually focussing the lens or using Live View for focussing then I expect you won't have any difficulty with this lens. However, anyone relying on the phase detect autofocus system (which comes into play when you focus via the viewfinder or when using "Quick Focus" in Live View) will encounter problems I suspect.
I have been using this lens for about a year now and it performs like no other lens I have ever owned. It is, in my opinion, faultless. The build quality, feel and operation gives the user a sense that this is a truly pro lens. And the results; well, they just speak for themselves.
There's something magical about the way this lens renders colours. That's not to say it alters hues etc. In fact, the results are very accurate, but the images have that certain something that sets them apart from lesser optics. Highly recommended for anyone who takes their photography seriously.
DON'T BE PUT OFF BY THE 1 STAR REVIEWS. THEY ARE FOR DIFFERENT VERSIONS.
its a pretty magical lens for certain situations and at F1.2 it creates a one of a kind Bokeh which I love. its almost dream like in its beauty. I rate this lens up there with some of my Leica glass which costs substantially more.
I have seen some negative reviews on this lens, but if you buy from Amazon and aren't happy its easy enough to get them replaced.
Well made and very very happy with it.
The only thing that is different for a amateur, is that you can't zoom in or out, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, as you get another perspective of the image, as the photographer is forced to move!
Brilliant lens would highly recommend for someone wanting to brighten up their indoor shots!
