I spent a lot of time researching which camera to buy and I am so pleased I went for the canon, it has a huge screen on the back which allows for instant and good quality playback but if you are interested in saving battery you can turn it off. The battery that comes with the camera is rechargable which i find a big plus as it keeps the camera light weight. The camera itself is the size of a credit card (but thicker) so it really is small and when shooting at night it has a grainy image on the screen so you can see where you are aiming.
One thing I would recommend is to order a case with the camera as it does not come with one.
If style, ease of use and high quality are things that are most important to you then I would definatly recommend this camera. I am throughly pleased with it.
The camera itself is absolutely stunning in terms of quality and engineering - Canon really know how to make cameras. It's tiny but perfectly formed. The LCD is HUGE taking up 80% of the rear of the unit. All controls are intuitive as on all Canon's. In fact the manual only runs to about a couple of pages of a very small notepad. Start up time is very quick. Movie mode is magic, exceptional quality though obviously only useful for short clips. No comments on battery life yet. I'm not overly impressed by the ability to download "themes" and "sounds" for it - it's a camera after all not a phone, but maybe that's because I'm a cynical 46 year old!
My only slight reservations which stop an immediate 5 stars are:
The switch for mode (still/movie/review) looks a little less robust than the rest of the camera and the battery/mem card compartment cover looks a little delicate, but hey, these are minor niggles from first impressions. I LOVE this camera, and so would you. Goodbye Coolpix, hello Ixus.....
Video mode is superb, choose 30fbs, and you can see how great it is, but it takes a large memory store space. Anyway, i guess that would not be a problem if you buy an SD memory card, with high speed and capacity. I bought it from Amazon very recently, together with SD card and a leather case, still haven't got the case, but the camera and the card arrived and they are great.
This by far is the best camera i have bought, and it is a lot of fun to use, and you can carry it everywhere. You can also choose different settings for your photos, in addition to in-camera red eye reduction to make things even better.
If you are looking for a great camera, this is the one. Great price, amazing camera, and you do not need any more pixels unless you are planning to print your photos on large posters.
Do not hesitate, get one if you do not already have a digital camera or looking for a new one.
1. The camera starts to look very tatty very quickly picking up scratches to the metal - esk casing and buttons/switches loosing their coating all together. This is wear and tear even with using the case, which I bought separateley (the proper cannon case) which also turns this small nifty camera into a bulky item.
2.Switching betwwen camera/movie/view mode is now very difficult to do as the switch for this is now sticking on movie. very annoying.
3. only really produces good pictures on standard view. Try zooming and this camera has had it even on the optical zoom, but trying to digitally zoom is pointless - your pictures will not come out how you may have expected.
4.has started making a weird clunking noise when turning off and retracting the zoom lens.
5.does not perform well on night shots.
I wish I had read somthing like this before buying, it may have convinced me to go for a slighlty more expensive camera. Do not buy it thinking it is pro - ish just because it's a Cannon, it's nowhere near that, it is a fun, cheap camera that's great for taking shots on the spur of the moment and capturing some great memories reasonably well.
So, what to replace it with? A digital SLR? My short list came down to the Nikon D50 and the Canon 350D. But wait a minute. I have two excellent film SLR's and never use them much. Why? Because you can't fit them in your pocket and you look like a complete dork carrying them around on your neck or under your arm. So, I went back to looking at compacts, considered the reviews, looked at the opposition and decided to go for a Canon again - Digital Ixus 55 this time.
And it's a cracker. Much thiner than the already diminutive Ixus V, but still big enough to be usable; loads of features; a superb, massive viewing screen; no particular delay when you press the button; excellent pictures and excellent available light shots when you go manual and chose the 400 ASA setting. Best of all, it fits in a (shirt) pocket and you don't even notice it until needed. As a bonus, the video it takes is also excellent. Canon really have done an outstanding job on this camera.
