10 Megapixels. 10x optical Zoom. 10 years of premium performance.
It’s been 10 years since the stylish, high-performance Canon IXUS range was launched and to celebrate this milestone, Canon has developed its most advanced IXUS model yet. The IXUS 1000 HS is the first IXUS model to offer an incredibly compact 10x optical zoom lens and the ability to capture 1080p Full HD movies with stereo sound – making it the slimmest super zoom camera of its kind anywhere in the world.
Capture the scene exactly as you see it with the Canon HS System
The IXUS 1000 HS features the powerful Canon HS System, which combines a 10 megapixel high sensitivity CMOS sensor with Canon’s advanced DIGIC 4 processor. The system allows for excellent high image quality, especially in low light conditions, plus high speed stills and movie shooting. The increased sensitivity of the HS System allows it to capture a wider dynamic range, reducing highlight blowout and loss of detail in shadows. It all adds up to a remarkable quality of image in all light conditions – enabling you to preserve your memories in perfect detail, whether in stills or video.

The Canon HS System truly excels in low light conditions. Capturing well exposed subjects inside, against dark backgrounds or outside in low light can be difficult. The flash range is not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of handheld shooting. With the Canon HS System, background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled – maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur.
Wider ISO range
The HS System allows for significant noise reduction at all ISO levels while maintaining accurate colours and crisp detail. The camera also supports a maximum ISO speed of 3200 at full resolution, while an extended maximum speed of ISO 6400 is available at 2.5MP resolution, allowing the camera to capture the natural ambience of dimly-lit environments without the flash.

High Speed Burst
The HS System also offers the capability to record high-speed, non-stop action in High Speed Burst mode. Taking up to 3.7 shots per second at full 10.0MP resolution or 8.8 shots per second at 2.5MP resolution, the camera allows you to capture fast-moving subjects, so whether you’re shooting sports events or life in motion you will never miss a moment’s action.
Super Slow Motion Movie
This mode captures movies at a staggering 240 frames per second and plays them back at normal speed for a spectacular slow motion effect. The free software included with the camera supports multi-speed playback, allowing the footage to be viewed both at real or slow motion speed, so you won’t miss a moment. Which makes it the perfect tool for analysing your back hand or improving your golf swing. Just take a look at the video at the top of the page to see this feature in action.
Compact but powerful zoom
A powerful 10x zoom capability in a camera as compact as the IXUS 1000 HS makes it the slimmest, super-zoom camera of its kind. The zoom range is complemented perfectly with a Canon genuine lens and advanced Image Stabilizer technology, which means significantly reduced blur and ultra-sharp images, even in low light conditions and when the zoom is extended. So you can capture truly unique scenes in any light condition and detailed close-ups, even from afar.

Timeless style and advanced functionality in one slimline compact
As well as demonstrating professional quality, the IXUS 1000 HS showcases the superior style qualities the series is renowned for. This elegant compact features an ultra slim stainless steel body with silver, brown or pink variations in a glossy metallic finish - so you can select the colour which best suits you. It also boasts a wide 7.6cm (3.0") PureColor II G LCD display with enhanced visibility, and a tempered glass outer layer to provide a high contrast, wide viewing angle - ideal for shooting large groups from trickier angles. So whether you’re shooting across a red carpet or up from your seat at an evening dinner, you’re guaranteed beautiful results from Canon’s most stylish compact yet.
Capture beautiful evening stills in hand-held night scene mode
Another feature of the HS System, Hand-held Night Scene mode, makes it possible to capture beautiful night shots without the need for a tripod. The camera’s optical Image Stabilizer, combined with a fast shutter speed, smoothly combats the difficulties of night shooting such as image blur, high noise levels and inaccurate exposure. These advanced features allow several high speed shots to be taken in succession, and then combined to produce one sharp and optimally-exposed picture.
Record fast-paced, full High Definition movies with stereo sound
For moments that are better caught on video, the IXUS 1000 HS offers advanced video performance with the capability to record full HD movies at 1080p. 10x optical zoom is available during shooting, and stereo sound guarantees clear, CD-quality audio every time.
The lens’ quiet motor allows you to zoom during recording with minimum audio interference, while the intelligent Dynamic Image Stabilizer is designed to reduce the effects of camera shake if you need to move with your scene. Using the various shooting modes in movie can add an interesting dynamic to your footage. In Smart Auto mode, the camera automatically analyses conditions and selects the optimal settings from 28 different situations. And Miniature Mode adds a completely new dimension to video – resulting in dramatic and compelling miniature-style, timelapse videos.
A world of advantages with Canon technology
Experience intelligent technology with DIGIC 4
The fast processing capability of the DIGIC 4 processor facilitates a range of technologies which enhance the quality and creativity of your images. It enables intelligent evolved Face and Object Detection Technology, which finds and tracks moving subjects until you're ready to shoot, adjusting the camera settings for optimal results. Faces will have natural-looking skin tones and additional Blink Detection lets you avoid the disappointment of mis-timed people shots by displaying a 3 second warning if a person in the frame has their eyes closed. Red-Eye Correction is an integral feature to ensure flawless photos as well as Canon’s i-Contrast feature, which offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions.
Smart Auto technology is the most comprehensive in the market and features Scene Detection Technology which provides the best results in all conditions, intelligently detecting the scene and selecting the optimum settings from 28 variables, including six newly-developed scenes.

Smart Flash Exposure controls flash levels according to shooting conditions, providing the right amount of flash to ensure perfectly exposed shots in all situations.
New scene modes allow you to easily expand your photographic results. These include Miniature effect, which reproduces the effect of a very narrow depth of field transforming normal landscapes into miniature look-alikes; and Fish Eye, which reproduces the effect of a fish eye lens in three different levels of intensity.
Capturing self-portraits has never been easier with Smart Shutter, which utilizes Face Detection Technology, allowing you to trigger the shutter using a smile or a wink of the eye. With Face Self-Timer, you can set the camera to shoot automatically after detecting a new face in the frame, meaning nobody’s left behind in group shots. And if you’re at a more advanced level and require additional levels of creative control, the IXUS 1000 HS also offers control over shutter speed or aperture settings in Tv and Av modes respectively.
Store and share your masterpieces with ease
Because Canon understands that taking photos is only half the fun, it supports both SDXC and Eye-Fi memory cards. With storage of up to 2000 gigabytes, the SDXC card allows you to snap away without worrying about running out of memory, and the Eye-Fi model lets you transfer pictures and videos online, directly from your camera, via it’s own Wi-Fi transmitter. You can also use the mini HDMI cable to play your HD videos on widescreen TV or send them wirelessly to your own PC.
Upload to YouTube
For fast and easy uploading of your clips to sharing websites like YouTube, Easy Web Upload software is included free in the box. This will display your movie clips and can also store your YouTube log in details – so you can simply select your clip and upload with one click.

I know that many people mentioned the camera's battery.... so let's get the negatives out of the way first.... yes the battery is pretty weak for such a powerful camera (shame on Canon) - however this can be easily rectified by purchasing a second battery (as I did from eBay, really cheap, (£4) and it lasts even longer than the original Canon one (purchased a 1000mh battery). That's that problem solved. I have found I can use the camera loads - with flash, using the video and having the two batteries is more than sufficient.
Secondly - the problem with how slow the camera is to come on and/or focus: yes it is quite slow in comparison to say my Fuji camera - but this I am presuming is due to the amount of tech that is in the camera and the fact that it works out what the lens is 'seeing' to produce the correct exposure and settings. Especially on auto mode - the features there are amazing to ensure you have perfect shots. It has the technology in-built to automatically assess the scene and set the appropriate settings acordingly.
Thirdly - the fact that the camera is an HS model (High Sensitivity) meaning it's built specifically for low(er) light shots - this has resulted in a few pictures being either over exposed or the aperture being just too high.
Now onto the postives - I have found the pictures to be sharp on the whole - exceptionally so - the lighting is so natural I'm very impressed. Sometimes taking shots outdoors leads to photos having unrealistic tones; not in the case of this little beauty.
In auto mode you can literally point and shoot for great shots - the camera will do all the work - of course not every shot will be perfect - that would be the same for any camera - but generally I have found pictures to have great clarity in many different settings and light.
The program mode has a wonderful aray of features - including a foliage setting which makes pictures encompassing grass, trees and plants come out with a lovely enhancement of colour. The other features include: fireworks, portfolio, face recognition, panoramic, snow, candlelight, night-time, colour swap and more!
There is a slow motion video feature too - handy if you want to watch your dance moves or film insects flying and watch in more detail!!
The macro feature is also fabulous - I like taking pictures of the micro world so this has been especially exiting to see the results of my pics - eg I took a pic of a spider and the resulting picture show the hairs on it's legs. Fantastic!
The normal video mode is HD quality and my resulting videos have been just fantastic, they look almost professional!!!
The camera can do so much more - best to check the Canon website out and watch the video of it in action - overall I'm chuffed to bits with this camera - ideal for other budding photography enthusiasts out there!
However it's temperamental. Use it in less than perfect light conditions and it produces a grainy image (that's stills and video) or even worse it won't focus at all in dim lighting.
The auto focus is too intelligent for its own good and takes way too much time to sort itself out, meaning the magic moment is usually over!
One of the selling points was the full HD video capability. Again, in ideal conditions it's really good, but throw something challenging at it like low lighting, a lot of movement, or objects moving back and forth within the field of vision and it starts to get its knickers in a twist.
Overall it had great promise. I've been a Canon Ixus fan for years and was really looking forward to this latest one being released. I have to say I'm a little disappointed.
First charge lasted just 80 shots (flash used on only 2 of them) and 3 small (sub 2 minute) videos. This was a mixture of testing low light (but not using flash) and a video of full zoom out and back in again.
The second charge lasted 112 shots, but that was testing out the burst mode.
I have done 2 futher charges that again lasted between 80 and 120 shots, with very little use of flash. So its being Returned to Amazon.
This camera would be ideal for a travel camera if not for the battery life, when you set off in the morning for a day sight seeing, you want to have confidence that the battery will still have charge by lunchtime. The pics and Video it creates are amazing, the zoom is beautiful and the build quality is great. But its useless if you can only use it for a few shots or a couple of hours. In these days of 32GB cards which hold thousands of photos, its mad to launch a camera that cant even fill a 2GB card on its Battery.
As an Ixus fan for many years, I decided to trade up my Ixus 200, intially I went for the Canon 300HS which looks great in real life by the way (Black version), very very cool especially when compared to the photos of it - although I soon realised the 1000 was not that much more from a cost perspective and boasted full hd video, 10x optical zoom and a wider lense.
So the Ixus 1000, what I like, the 10 x optical zoom, the fish eye and miniture options are absolutely fantastic, although the 300hs also has the minature and fish eye.
What I don't like, the battery life is around 170 shots, not great at all when compared to my older ixus models, it just doesn't quite cut it for me in terms of looks when it compares to the 300hs and my 200, from what I have seen, although the light may have been an issue, it hasn't taken particulary great pictures or hd video in areas where the light isn't that great, for instance I tested in at Hampton court on the ceiling murals in the not so great lit rooms.
Probably should have stuck with the 300hs, but couldn't send the 1000 back.
