Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4.0 L USM Ultra-Wide Angle Canon EF Zoom Lens - Black.
From the manufacturer
Ultra wide-angle lenses are the ideal tools for landscapes and their use is not limited to getting more in the frame. Used well, an ultra wide-angle lens can add drama and manipulate perspective, creating a photo that is dynamic and mesmerising. A good wide-angle shot should make you feel like you are being drawn into the photograph.
A High-Quality, Wide-Angle Zoom for a Variety of Subjects
This ultra wide-angle zoom lens offers better image quality and a constant maximum aperture. Its compact, lightweight body makes it an ideal travelling companion.
Better Optical Performance
The lens super spectra coating ensures better colour balance and minimises ghosting and flare. Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass prevents chromatic aberrations.
Smooth Background Blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background. Minimum focusing distance is just 28 cm throughout the entire zoom range.

So, when I got this lens I did so specifically to use it at the 20-24mm range, not the 17mm side of things (as zoom lenses often perform at their best when in the middle of their range). I did some extensive tests when I got it and can categorically state that at around 21mm there is practically ZERO distortion. In fact between 20-24mm distortion is negligible, and certainly not anything I'd have to correct (Yey!), but at 21mm it's just sublime as far as distortion goes.
The 2nd surprise was how much sharper this lens is than the 24-105. I did side-by-side comparisons of some complex textures and this lens simply blows the 24-105 out of the water at around 24mm, especially at the sweet-spot of f/11, although it's still very usable at f/16, and certainly better than the 24-105 at the same apertures.
Now, for my needs (which is quite specific in that I will only use this lens at around 24mm) it is a superb lens which I would find difficult to match even in a prime, and as I always use apertures of f/11 or smaller for my landscape work, the fact that it's an f/4 lens is of no odds to me.
However, if you are buying this to use the 17mm side of things then I'm afraid that I can't really comment on its use as that's not why I bought it. Similarly, if you are buying this as a general purpose zoom I'd reconsider because 17-40 is too narrow a zoom range and I'd suggest you go for the 24-105 instead for this case.
As a 21mm-24mm landscape lens at f/11 or smaller though, it's hard to beat - and the price is excellent too.
Oh, incidentally, before I bought this I bought the 16-35 MkII f/2.8 and at 21-24mm and f/11 this lens is actually superior. The 16-35 exhibited some distortion at that range whilst this one does not. So, I didn't buy this lens because I couldn't afford the 16-35 MkII, I bought it because it was the better lens for my personal (and specific) needs.
Nowadays I mostly use this lens with the camera on a tripod (or more simply just sitting on top of my rucksack) with a remote shutter-release cable or trigger for landscape or architectural shots - and in that capacity it performs wonderfully - lack of IS is not an issue and I generally use manual focus although the auto-focus has never let me down if there is a particular feature I feel I'd like to focus on, but as I am generally working with f/8 - f/11 for this type of photography focus is often not a critical issue.
Beyond its effectiveness as an excellent lens which takes wonderful photographs, it is worth noting firstly that as a zoom this lens does not extend - although the rear element does move within the barrel when zooming, if a decent protective filter is fitted* there are no external moving parts and therefore there is no 'bicycle-pump' effect to suck in dust and the lens is essentially weatherproof - I have always liked this feature. Secondly, this is an 'L' lens - it just oozes quality, craftsmanship and engineering precision - it is a joy to use and a pleasure to handle - but it is also robust and built to last, both of which are important qualities.
All in all I would have to say this has been a great lens - I would not like to be without it - and I'm happy to give it five stars and to class it as 'highly recommended.'
*My lens is fitted with a 77mm Hoya Pro 1 Digital Protector filter - a highly recommended accessory - but note that at the shortest focal lengths any filter or filters on this lens, including a Lee kit, will result in some vignetting.
The lens hood which is supplied with the lens is necessarily shallow because of the 17mm wide angle of view and with the best will in the world it's hard to see how it can help so I rarely if ever use it. When it is off-camera my lens lives in a Lowepro S2 lens case because the lens pouch which came with the lens offers no padded protection and it remains unused in the box.
