Product description
The EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens has been developed to meet the high-performance standards. Improved Image Stabiliser Technology provides up to three stops of 'shake' correction and the 'Mode 2' option stabilises images while panning with a moving subject. Compared to the original Canon EF 75-300 mm IS zoom lens, this telephoto lens has faster auto-focus and overall the lens is lighter and has a smaller diameter than the original. The zoom ring can be locked at the 70 mm position, making this powerful lens easy to transport.
From the manufacturer
One of the great challenges of photography is how to capture a world full of movement in a single static image. It is not just about selecting the right camera settings. When you are shooting sports, animals or any fast-moving action, choosing the correct lens for the job is crucial.
An affordable telephoto zoom with Image Stabilizer
The powerful, yet reasonably priced, EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM will appeal to nature and sports photographers looking to achieve sharper images when shooting handheld.
Image Stabilizer
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM features a 3-stop Image Stabilizer, making this an ideal lens for handheld work. Shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would be otherwise possible can be used with no perceptible increase in image blur.
Ultrasonic focusing
An ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting.
Pleasing background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm, which is controlled electromagnetically, gives out-of-focus regions a softer, more even feel, and lets in-focus subjects stand out against a blurred background.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2014I have had this lens over a year now. I have used it on safari in Africa (with a Canon 550D) and it stood up well to the dust and vibration of many game drives for 1000s of shots. I am really pleased with the quality of the images, and the Image Stabilisation is excellent - allowing you to shoot in much lower light than without - ideal for early morning and late afternoon game drives when light is low.
For me it was an upgrade from the 75-300, and the image quality is far superior. Does it compare to "L" glass - I don't know, I have never used these lenses (or wanted to spend that amount of money!). However, I am really pleased I bought it and think it is good value.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2016My lens went missing in the post but I bought from elsewhere and wanted to give this a review anyways.
I would class the USM range of canon lenses to be their mid range lenses, They have some of the features of L lenses but often with cheaper glass and the bodies not being made out of metal and also not being waterproof.
The lens is a little soft when used at 300mm but if you stop it down to 250 and below it is amazingly sharp.
I wouldn't recommend this to someone with a cheap camera that don't work well at high ISO because its not the fastest piece of glass. Normally if I'm using this indoors with pretty good light coming through the windows I would have to use around ISO3200 on my Canon 6D to get a nice bright picture I can work on, but outdoors you could use this at ISO100 and not have any problems.
The lens features a nice lock switch to stop it from extending when your carrying it around your neck while out and about, which I think is a lovely feature and also wished Canon used it on all zoom lenses as my Canon 24-105mm L sens doesn't have it and when I walk around sometimes it fully extends which can be a pain and helps to promote dust getting inside.
The IS seems to work really well and it even features 2 types of IS, mode 1 for vertical and horizontal stabilizing and mode 2 for only vertical, for those moments when you want to take a picture of say a passing car or bike and you don't want the IS to be lagging behind the object.
So overall, with the right camera and in the right hands you can get some fantastic pictures with this lens. Just remember you don't need expensive equipment to get the best picture, its the person behind the lens that takes the picture. the glass just helps.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2013I earlier had a 70-200 f4 L, but felt I required a bit more reach. I did consider the 'L' 70-300 but decided that it cost much more than I was willing to spend for a hobby item, plus I dislike the silly pale grey Canon insist on painting their professional telephoto zooms and primes. My priority was good optical quality - both in terms of sharpness one stop down and lack of chromatic aberrations. After doing fairly extensive research I decided on this lens. Optically it is close enough to the 70-300L to make no difference. Mechanically it isn't in the same league, but is well made and perfectly adequate for anything short of day-in, day-out professional hammer. Although it has USM focusing, this is the micromotor rather than ring motor version, but is reasonably quiet and fast; I find it tracks aircraft perfectly well. The only theoretical downside is that this doesn't allow full-time manual focus, you have to switch it to manual first. But FTM is a much overrated quality. If you do wish to focus manually the focus ring is good by modern standards but of course does spin when using AF, so you do have to keep your fingers clear. Again, not something to get upset about considering that this lens costs about a third of the L version.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2011The IS really works a treat, gives at least 2 stops in most situations and three on a lot of them, four, well I haven't seen that. Feels pretty well built and the switches fall easily to hand. Not too heavy either to use for long periods but it is somewhat heavier than the original 75-300. Despite what I've said about the build quality, note also that you are not getting an `L' quality lens on the cheap as I've heard said about some of Canon's non `L' lens!
Bought this to replace an old canon 75-300 that came with a 20D I got when that camera first came out, and there's the rub (and the three stars), the quality of results just aren't as good as the 75-300. The pictures are not quite as sharp no matter what I try and certainly can't `blur' (bokeh) the background as well either.
It does allow a slightly wider view, which is handy but I have to say that overall I'm somewhat disappointed and wish I'd got the 70-200 L instead. Though, judging by a lot of the other comments here it maybe that I have a slightly defective piece of kit.
UPDATE 9/2/2011
Having used this for quite a while longer I can say that I find one can get sharper results if one sticks to 200mm and between f/8 and f/16. It's at 300mm that things get soft. I have used it mounted on an LX90 telescope and got fair results at 300mm of Orion and the Hyades, so 300 is good for something :-) I'm exaggerating slightly, 300 is OK if slightly soft shots are OK for the subject you are taking. I also find running the results through DxO helps a great deal.
One final point, despite not being a 2.8 lens or particularly long and heavy I really would not want to hand hold this lens for very long. I've found after about ½ hour or so my ability to hold the camera anywhere near steady with this lens isn't great; despite what I've seen stated in some reviews!

FernandezReviewed in the United States on 10 November 20155.0 out of 5 stars Love it.
I love this lens I use it on a daily bases. It's great for when I'm taking pictures of little league baseball. The quality is great. It does make the camera a bit heavier I have a Canon 70d so the body is a little heavier than most canons but it's so worth it.

luisReviewed in Spain on 20 March 20145.0 out of 5 stars Buen Teleobjetivo.

Carmelo BurgioReviewed in Italy on 13 January 20145.0 out of 5 stars Quando un'immagine vale più di mille parole
Pro:
1)Obiettivo molto veloce, negli scatti sportivi è davvero eccezionale.

Raymund SchmidtReviewed in Germany on 20 September 20135.0 out of 5 stars Super Objektiv zu günstigem Preis

NiKoReviewed in France on 16 December 20214.0 out of 5 stars Zoom de bon rapport qualité-prix
